Does it annoy you when people say they want to go in to nursing but refuse to deal with the icky stuff?

Perhaps I shouldn't have ripped this woman apart so much, but It just really steams me. **** happens, patients don't stop making a mess just because you have BSN after your name. Blood samples need to be drawn, even in a clinic. Please let me know what you think. Am I correct or not?

haha that is hilarious!!! I hate that too. I'm in highschool now and EVERYONE wants to be a pediatrician. They will have 2.0 GPA's, say they hate science, and when we have to bisect stuff they just turn away. It's stupid, they just like the idea of being a nurse or a doctor and they don't want to work for it. Being a nurse is hard too. They have to know the body parts and how much medicine to give someone and where to put the IV, very experienced nurses even learn how to diagnose people (but not officially of course). Yeah you were right to do that to her (even if you were a little harsh)

Well, nursing can be a tough job. But they should be thankful they are not in one of these 10 worst jobs in america!

wouldnt let it get to you....dont think she will get very far anyway

When I was in nursing school and exhausted because I had a 2 yr old at home and still had to work to support my family one of the students on our first clinical round broke down crying in the unit. When the instructor and I noticed and inquired it was because she didn't know how to give a sponge bath. When questioned, "have you ever taken care of a sick family member?" We were both appalled that here she was always higher than mighty talking about how great we all were for choosing this field and she had never so much as given her mother a cup of tea when pregnant.

I did none of my own assignments that day, I did hers and mine with her observing in the corner of every room to ease her in.

This was an intensive program to get us out in the work force as quickly as possible and her spot should have gone to someone who deserved it and not drop out for another career in her final year.

Nursing is not always pretty and almost never clean. Imagine all the work a Dr. doesn't want, that is what nurses do.

I feel the same way as you. I truly believe that all nursing students should be required to do a month long internship as a nurses aid in a nursing home before applying to nursing school. It would weed out a lot of students who don't belong there.

It is really hard to be in most nursing positions without dealing with some physically challenging situations. I once worked with an RN years ago when I was an LPN that I never saw start an IV. this is really crazy. You have to be able to do your responsibilities well, so if in a truly emergent situation you are able to perform. If you don't want to deal with any type of physical nursing resp. then be sure you only push paper at some ins. co. or such. However; I don't know how you can know the job of nursing without ever doing it.

I TOTALLY AGREE. I love when somebody says "I want to be a nurse" but needles scare me. Get over it. Needles are not going to kill you. and getting your RN is HARD. REALLY HARD. So I wish people would start realizing that nursing can be gross and bloody and you have to be able to deal with it and not be such a woosy. Science is hard and being a nurse is hard. I completely agree, just because you have a BSN doesn't stop someone from puking on your shoes. If people can't handle needles and blood, go be a banker!

Yes! I have been a Registered Nurse for 19 years.
It seems that alot of younger nurses i.e., the new grads are entering the field with advanced degrees but with a lack of desire to do the dirty work involved in nursing.
Alot of them would like to flit around talking to the residents and relying on the patient care assistants to do everything for them. Sad, sad, sad....
However, I must also say that when nursing students come to do their clinicals at the hospital I work at, sadly enough, the instructors are rarely to be found which leave the students heavily relying on over burdened nurses to teach them.
I would love to if I had the time, but isn't this what their instructor is supposed to be doing.
It was different when I graduated back in the late 80's...

Yeah, that was pretty pitiful. If you can't handle the reality of caring for sick people then don't go into the medical field! I have my BSN and I'm not afraid of dealing with the gross stuff (and I've seen some NASTY stuff in my 5 years as a nurse!). And even when I get my MSN I still won't have a problem with it!
