Two membranes in pregnancy, and one baby?

I have a burning question- that I intend to ask my OB/GYN when I see here again, but until then, I will ask you all!

With my first child, I was told I had two membranes after delivery. My water broke, I went to the hospital and hours later after no progress with contractions and being pumped with patosin (sp?), a nurse decided to put a fetal monitor on my baby's head because she was going into distress. That is when they popped the second bag (that they had not known about it at the time) and the labor progressed, and baby was born a few hours later.

Now, all these years later, I'm curious about why I would have had TWO membranes! I there is no history of twins on either side of the family, no fertility drugs were used- all natural pregnancy!

Has anyone heard of such a thing? Why would this have happened, and what does it mean?

Thanks for your input! :)

I know for sure it was my water breaking when I went to the hospital, and the nurses believed so too! The doctor and the nurses did tell me I had two membranes- I just never wondered why until now!

It's possible that your water never broke and that you were just losing your mucus plug and you thought it was your water breaking. Also, your water may have broken, but it may have been a slow leak. Usually the sac shrinks and shifts to the sides or top during delivery, but sometimes gets stuck around the baby's head which is also known as a caul.
