Please Help me.. I am so confused.
I recently finished taking antibiotics for mastitis... I woke up today anf my left nipple was itchy and burns. There is nothing VISIBLY wrong with it though. It does not hurt to nurse the baby, but afterwards I feel a slight discomfort in the breast almost like a tugging or pulling sensation. So I assume it is thrush, right? Baby has NO symptoms in him mouth although he does have a small amount of diaper rash, which I am being told can be assocaited with thrush. I called my OB and she tells me that I "don't have thrush, that is something you get in your mouth.. you have a yeast infection on the breast".. Okay whatever.. She says I need to go to the pharmacy and ask for something called GENTIAN VIOLET. I have no clue what this is..
So here are my questions: If I have to put it on my nipple, is it safe for me to nurse?
If baby has thrush and is not showing symptoms, will this treat him too?
If his rash is in fast a yeast infection, can I apply the GV to his bottom to treat him as well?
Thanks. Thrush and yeast are the same thing. Just thrush usually refers to oral yeast.
Genetian violet is considered safe for breastfeeding, and can be used to treat infections in the babies mouth as well. However despite of the fact most people think it is a natural treatment, it is not:

If you want to take a more natural approach Grapefruit seed extract is often used. Mild vinegar solutions may help. Probiotics are also safe for babies, the dosage I use is 1/2 capsule twice a day, the inside powder is sweet and most babies love to eat it.

For fungal diaper rashes breastmilk and probiotics will work if used before it gets serious. Diluted vinegar may work for a slitghtly worse rash. If it's bad (or gets bad) get an over the counter cream. Any cream used for EXTERNAL vaginal yeast infections, jock itch or althete's foot will work. 1. YES - if you put it on the nipple, it's still safe to nurse
2. YES - it'll help to treat baby as well
3. If baby gets it on his bottom, you can spread plain (NO sugar) yogurt on his bum just like diaper cream with every diaper change.
Good luck - thrush is TERRIBLE! is a dark purple liquid use as a antiseptic that kills fungal infections...ok careful because it stains..paint your nipples let it dry and then feed your child, his mouth will turn purple and he'll look silly but it will rid both of you or any thrush present.... repeat once the color wears off if necessary. I think the GV is for you to treat your partially injured nipple, not the yeast/thrush or whatever.
Gentian Violet is a dark purplish blue liquid solution that is extremely staining. This means you have to be very careful not to spill it on your floors, cabinets or anywhere for that matter! However, it is also a very effective medication for open/sappy wounds and when applied, any abrasions or cuts will dry really quickly and that helps to relief alot of discomfort.
It is so effective that I use it on ulcers in my mouth so that it can close the wound in the fastest time possible. It definitely doesn't taste very pleasant and I think it shoudn't be consumed but I'm an adult and it was just a small dollop. Since this is a baby we are talking abt, I would advise you to check with your obgyn.
Regarding your 2nd question, like I said, GV's primary usage is to heal open/sappy wounds ASAP. I'm not sure about its medicinal qualities for treating things like yeast (Most likely you would need another medicine for treating that)
The same goes for your 3rd question. Keep in mind that GV is really so very wonderful for when you have a fall and have abrasions on your kneecaps, when you cut your fingers during cooking, ulcers in mouth and these type of injuries.
Don't worry about it staining your skin, it removes after a few washes. Be really careful about your carpet and furinture though! |
