Has anyone had a yeast infection in their breast?? Help!!!?

I have been on Diflucan for 5 (out of 14) days. I am still in pain off and on. When I nurse the baby, I feel fine. Then, the burning pain sets in a few minutes after he finishes. This happens sporadically throughout the day. Sometimes the pain is so bad that I can't sleep at night. It is also hard to hold my baby when my boob feels like it's on fire!!! Has anyone else experienced this before??? Does it ever go away??? I need help!

You are not alone! I had several cases of thrush when I was nursing my daughter and it was not fun. There were several things that helped me, although it can get tedious. First, you have to make sure that the baby is being treated at the same time you are, or you will keep passing it back & forth to each other (check with the pediatrician). I also took acidophilus 3x a day to regulate my digestion/yeast growth (you can find the chewable ones at a health food store like Whole Foods that taste like candy) and tried giving the baby bifidus (opened the capsules and put them in water). Another pain-in-the-neck at the time, that worked was cleaning my nipples with diluted white vinegar after nursing to kill the yeast. Finally, although it it sometimes hard when they are young, is to make sure you get enough sleep, b/c for some reason being tired increases your chances of getting a yeast infection. I really sympathize with you! When I had the infection, it seemed like it would never go away. You can check out the website below for great breastfeeding info. I hope this helps!

It sounds like a clogged milk duct, talk to your doctor!

Tea tree oil is really good at curing a yeast infection. Might have to dilute a little bit with olive oil, so it is not as strong. Put tea tree oil on breast, and let it air dry. It might burn initially, but it really works! Also get some DanActive or something. It will help get the yeast overgrowth under control. Good luck.

no but get that checked out

The correct dosing of Diflucan is a 400mg loading dose and then 100mg/twice a day for 14 days. It sounds like you have been given the correct course of Diflucan.

Another over the counter solution that many mothers find great success with is Gentian Violet. You have to ask the pharmacist for it but it is NOT a prescription. It is a topical suspension that you can rub on your nipples and in baby's mouth. It will not hurt you or baby, but will stain anything and everything it touches a lovely purple/blue color. Eventually the stain will wear off of skin, but not out of clothing.

To use Gentian Violet: Swab solution (.5% or 1% strength solution) over the nipple/areolae and/or in baby's mouth once or twice a day for three to seven days. Stop after four days if pain is gone.

Most times a combination of the Gentian Violet and Diflucan will take care of it. If not, contact a local La Leche League Leader (www.llli.org) for more help.

OMG!!! i have experienced that and it was the worse feeling ever, it felt like someone was slowing running a knife on my boob and nipple. I took tylenol for the pain but you can only take regular strength or one extra strength. sad to say but the pain didnt go away for me, if i forgot to take the tylenol and i fed my son i would feel it again even on the 12 day of being on diflucan. The pain was so excrutiating that i gave up breastfeeding because i didnt want to ever feel it again. and now that i stopped i havent felt any pain, my son is on formula and he's doing fine. keep your head up, i remember feeling so helpless when i had the breast yeast infection, but it will be ok. if breastfeeding is what you really want to do then you'll find a way to tough it out, but if not then you shouldnt feel any less of a mother if you dont, and if anyone says otherwise they dont know just how much it can hurt. i wish you the best of luck and i hope everything works out for you.

I had a terrible one that was kept reoccurring. I tried the gentian violet, but that stains, the nystatin that doesn't work. It wasn't until the diflucan and then the homemade breast cream that finally worked. It is equal parts of triple antibiotic ointment, anti fungal cream(lotrimin) and hydro cortisone. You just Rub a thin layer over the nipple after you nurse or shower. It does not have to be wiped off before nursing and you can use it as much as needed. It is also great for just sore nipples. This comes from Scott & White hospital lactation RN. As I understand it is the combination for a prescription that can be made at home.

I'd like to add that you also need to be treating the baby. Even if the baby shows no signs of thrush, you may be passing it back and forth.
