Example of Christian nastiness?

Okay. I went to the ER with a burn on my hand recently. At reception, there was a kind of chubby blonde nurse sitting there. She was very pleasant and sympathetic to me while I explained my burn. I noticed she had all kinds of angel paraphenalia in the little office, a WWJD sign, an angel pin on her uniform, and a Jesus fish on the computer. She starts asking me the usual questions, name, address, insurance, etc, then comes to religion. I said, "None." I swear, she dropped the pen and looked at me. "What?" "I said none, I'm an atheist." She immediately dropped all pretense at friendliness, became very short with me, and left me to sit there in pain while people who came in after me with lesser problems were sent right in. I did complain to the administrator, but he basically said "Sorry, but you scared her, I expect." Like I'm a demon or something! Is this fair? And has anything like this happened to any of you?

Tami - what earlier question? I haven't
asked a question in a long time, I don't think. The admin told me they ask in case something happpens so they can get you a priest, rabbi, whatever. They didn't have info on me because I have never been to that hospital before.

Not like that, no...

Should I be nervous that she got a degree in science and remained that subjective in her job? I think so...

I did have this experience the other day at work. I'm a waitress at an expensive place. This millionaire and his family came in. His daughter, a young woman in college, began to talk of the atheists she had met at school. They just had this conversation loud and proud about all these total misconceptions on what we are and what we are like... the usual stuff like the myths I posted earlier...

And it made me feel as though THIS must be what it was like to be black in this country fifty years ago, or to be gay even in the present day... it was a horrible feeling. As if I am not human, just a specimen of some kind. I may have read too much into it... It just made me really sad.

No...

Document it, and contact a lawyer if you feel you suffered any mental anguish or other wise.

Some are easy to throw off. Many take longer than others to adjust. Keep in mind, admitting athiesm is fairly new.

I love you and am thankful for your life, and I am a Christian.

David

What was she doing asking your religion? Last time I was at the doctor's office that sure wasn't on the admission paperwork.

i didn't know they had the right to ask you what your religion was --- i guess intolerance can show up anywhere. to answer your question, no: it isn't fair at all.

that's weird. i've gone to er before, and the receptionist has never asked what religion i am. just my name, address, and insurance. i'm a christian, but i would never do that to anyone else. she's probably a strict christian.

You should talk to a lawyer.

By the gods...... that's despicable. And that's why religion has no place in the work place.

I'd say go talk to a lawyer.

Do NOT LUMP all Christians in this category
A Human is a Human and deserves care regardless of Religion

God will judge us all
The Believers as well as the Non-Believers
Just because you Believe in God does not mean you automatically have a ticket into Heaven

She's probably not a Christian, judging by all the angel paraphenalia. The description of angels in the bible bears no resemblence to all the figurines, etc.

But maybe you were a little shocking. Just a little?

P.S. what's all the lawyer talk? Has society progressed to the point we sue over every insult, even if it wasn't meant as an insult?

Hospitals ask religion to know whether to ask if you want a rabbi, Christian minister, immam or whatever to visit if you get really sick.

do they really ask you your religion when you go to the ER? Why?

If the story's true it was very unprofessional of her - not to say rude. Still you got her back by calling her 'chubby'

Based on your earlier questions, I think this is fiction.

Sounds a bit extreme to me.

I worked triage in an ER for quite some time. I would find it VERY strange for a nurse to walk away from a patient based upon declared religious affiliation even *IF* it's asked in your local area.

Not to that extent, but I did have a Christian condemn me to hell when they learned i was a catholic

That's pretty disgusting, for her to show her 'Christian love' in that way. It's never happened to me, and should it - well, lets just say I've never been known for pulling punches.

Edit: Yes, they ALWAYS do, hot turkey!

You shouldn't have been treated that way. Sorry to hear your story. I am a Christian and there are those that say they are Christian but do not follow Gods command to show mercy and grace and love to all.

NO IT HASN'T, BUT IF SHE WAS A TRUE CHRISTIAN LIKE ME, SHE WOULD NOT OF DONE THAT, YOU SHOULD REPORT HER, I', VERY SORRY FOR THE YOUR PAIN, AND THAT YOU HAD TO WAIT. REPORT HER.

Yes, similar things have happened to me. I tend to keep my beliefs to myself in real life. I don't want to take all that time trying to explain to people who's opinions of me I don't care about.

You could have answered "None of your business" to her question. I wonder if that would have made any difference?

I don't wear my heart on my sleeve. I don't delve into
religion with others,it's too divisive and it's a personal
deal to me. Whether or not someone is an atheist
is their choice not mine.

OMG
That's discrimination based on religion so you could get her fired. That is absolute bogus, I think I might have told her off or something....

If this is true then No this isn't fair and there is probably more you could have done to make sure she was reprmanded for this. I'm a Christian and it's things like that, that give us a bad name. I'm sorry she did this to you. That isn't the Christian thing of her to do. God see's this and knows this. So with her belief she should be worried about how she treats people! I'm not trying to offend you with the God stuff, but I know as a Christian, she definately isn't living right with what she believes.

I never heard of an ER asking what religion someone is. If it's true, she could get her license suspended for acting that way. You should file a complaint with the College of Nurses.

She might claim to be christian, but by your description of her actions, she's not.

You should report this further. You scared her is not an answer!
And yes, I have had the similar experiences. Usually the more they put out the Jesus fish and WWJD crap, the nastier they are to folks that realize that religion stops a thinking mind.

But did you tell her you were an athiest just because you knew she was a Christian? Did she ask you that question or were you just trying to get to her? We aren't usually like that except when athiests make fun of us. But if she did anything wrong, I would like to apologize on her behalf as a Lutheran.

No this is totally not fair and completely not christian response. (In my country they aren't allowed to ask about religion any more.)

Oh I am so sorry. That is awful.

This should not be happening, I am so sorry that it does, However I can only do what I can do...

You might like to check out my question what should we do with Christian Bigots. (leave some comments love to hear them)

faithfreedom.org google it!

So sorry you got treated so nasty. :( I have actually been treated badly because of my beliefs..so I understand your feelings. No matter what you believe you shouldnt be treated badly by anyone, unless you are doing something to deserve it (hurting someone in some way). I again am sorry you were treated that way. I am a Christian and have friends who do NOT believe the same way..they are my friends..i love them..and will treat them with the respect they deserve, no matter what they believe in...

PS: I hope your burn is better..

There's freaks in all walks of life... When I was working in a store, I was wearing a cross necklace, nothing very big just a simple gold cross. A woman, mid 30s-ish asked me kinda rudely why I was wearing a cross. I said "My mom got it for me and I like it" she asks "are you a Christian?" I said, smiling, "I'd like to think so" and grabs the hand of her little girl who was maybe 4 as if I was about to kidnap her... throws the money at me and said "G-damned Jesus freaks.. you make me SICK!"

I dont know what religion this woman was if any... but there are definitely freaks outside of Christianity.

well you shouldnt judge everyone else because of one person, sounds like your own prejudice is the question at hand here.
