Breastfeeding and burning sensation?

My daughter is 17 days old. Ive been breastfeeding only. I had engorgement for a few days the first week. Then everything seemed fine after that went away. Now a few days back, whenever I am nursing and every once in a while when I'm not, I get almost like a burning sensation in the top part of my breasts. Its not around the nipple or anything just the upper part of my breast. It doesnt last long, but it can really be very uncomfortable and painful. Has anyone else had this? Is this normal? What is it? Thanks for your advice.

congratulations on the birth of your daughter - considering it's natural, breastfeeding has a lot of things to learn about, huh?!

Sounds like let-down to me too, although I feel it as pins and needles.

I've now been BFing my second daughter for 4 months and it all really settles down after 6 weeks, and even more so after another 6.

keep with it, it'll all sort itself out and you'll know what you're doing and what's happening.

Visit kellymom.com for some GREAT info on BFing.

you're probably experiencing letdown. it's uncomfortable, but it's ok. i can't really explain it, but it's perfectly normal for a nursing mom

Sound like it's your milk. It's called "let down" It can feel kinda weird, maybe slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. Feels kinda like hot or tingly near your armpit (s) It's just your breast filling with milk. Time to feed Jr.

It could be your breast filling up with milk when you hear your baby cry. Hormones play such a big part in breastfeeding.
Do you drink lots of water so your body is able to make more milk. Drinking lots of water is a key factor in being able to produce milk. If not water then drink something good for you. No caffeine.

It's probably thrush/yeast, if it doesn't go away within a few minutes of starting it definitly isn't letdown.

There are many treatments of yeast infections of the breast -sometimes called thrush (technically thrush only refers to yeast infections of the mouth). In your case with the deep breast pain you would need oral treatment, combined with treatment on your nipples and oral treatment of the baby. Even though the baby may not have any symptoms it is best to treat the baby, just to prevent it getting passed back and forth.

There are of course prescription drugs, which do work. There are over the counter treatments, and natural treatments which also do work and there is even some scientific evidence for many of them. There is also no harm to combining the two.

[It is important to note that one over-the-counter treatment Genetian Violet is often referred to as a natural treatment, it is not. It may also carry some risks]
