Stressful job...... (Nursing) it's taking it's toll Anyone else going through this?

The underdogs of the medical field are overworked and underpaid. It's a very stressful job, and I am burned out after two years. All I wanted to do was make people feel better, but now days most people are rude, demanding, and think they are owed something in life. I a, burned out and ready for a new career, is it just me?

i was in sub acute and there i REALLY FELT OVERWORKED and UNDERPAID...imagine 12.50 an hour for suctioning trachestomies, giving all meds through a g-tube, changing diapers, and being the RN's puppet even though i have a nursing license... ugh...but when i went to newport beach i was well compensated for the level of stress....lets face it..youre always going to have stress..its just the degree of it.....PEOPLE SWEAR that we're supposed to tend to their every need when theyre in our facilities but theres only so much you can do..(you DO have other patients) and sometimes your team members arent exactly helpful...just count the positives.....TRY as HARD as you can to forget the negatives..youre a strong person for being a nurse..not everyone can do what you do! just remember you made a difference (big or little) in someones life! i tell myself that everyday! GOOD LUCK!!! we need you with us! oh and take time to do something you like doing ( i scrapbook!) or just go to the beach!

I'd never want to be a doctor or a medic however much they pay. It's the filthiest job ever. They often get sick from the patients they have to deal with. All the sick people in the entire area are around you.

I worked in a seinors home for about a year and a half, and all the same thing that you mentioned happened, and now, I don't worry about it anymore, I quit that place and now I'm an apprentice mechanic. You think that wokring under hood would in a "staff only" section would eleminate rude people but it doesn't, get used to the rudeness, its here to stay sadly enough

You are definitely not the only one who is burned out in nursing.

Here is what a report about nursing job stress in New York says:
http://www.nysna.org/departments/communi...

And I'm sure it's like that in other states too.

I don't think unionized nurses are underpaid, but I might agree with the over-worked part, particularly as hospital care seems to rely more and more on visiting families and volunteers to do things for the patients. I recall my husband having surgery and it was not the nurses who walked him around after he awoke or ensured he had water and was kept comfortable - it was me! This is not due to laziness on anybody's part, but too few workers on the floor where my husband was at.

There aren't many people NOT underpaid and overworked in the UK in any profession.

I worked in the medical field for 11 years so I understand what you are feeling. Do you ever take vacations? This is real important for someone in your line of work - it is necessary to give YOURSELF some 'nurturing time' so when you take a vacation, remember to nurture yourself and enjoy. There are always people who do not appreciate what others do for them. But if you take a close look at the 'big picture' I am sure that you will see those people who soooo appreciate what you do for them. Focus on those people and their response and realize that you ARE doing good for others. And realize that those people who are rude are in a situation that they don't want to be in and are frustrated and ill, hurt, and frightened. Many people strike out at others when they feel this way. Your job is a challenging position but if you keep your focus, be kind to yourself, and continue to try, you will be a success. If all else fails, you have an education that can take you elsewhere. Best of luck. Bless you.

I hear ya......(Logistics) it's been 6 years and now I can't stand it anymore.
