Nursing question? Please help me? |
My son turned 7 months on sept. 1. I have been nursing in fully up til aug 27. He is on the very small side, He only wanted to nurse about every 5 hours, with a 10-15 mins on both sides. Not long enough at all. Then nursing him he was screaming almost like my milk would be burning him and he would bit me when mad. So I was at my wits end. And then on aug 27 just nursed him once at 2pm and during the night and til now. I beleive I was making about 4 ounces every 5 hours. now this week, I missed nursing all the time, so I decied I wanted to start back up which would be no problem to just increase my milk but now the problem is I am so sore. He actually has me bleeding where when I pumped the milk was bloody. It almost like my nipple is falling off. What do I do? Soon I won't be able to make any more milk. How can I heal it faster but still nurse? When nurseing or pumping it hurts so bad. OR do you think I should just be finished Also, he is sick with cold and I blame me not nursing. ~Thank you~ This is a difficult situation. Dr. Jack Newman is a Canadian pediatrician who specializes in breastfeeding. If you follow the link he will personally answer your breastfeeding questions for you. He also has a book called guide to breastfeeding although your problem seems a little complex for the reading material in the book. Anyways I hope this helps. you need salve on those. can you pump until you heal, as long as you pump milk production wont stop. you might need some antibiotic cream for the nipples. so sorry to hear about your discomfort. At 7 months, nursing for 10-15 minutes on both sides is perfectly normal. As your baby gets older, he becomes more efficient at nursing and so it usually does not take as long. Many women think that their milk supply is low, but it is not. My son used to finish nursing in 5 minutes at times! Are you bleeding because he bit you? I would suggest using lanolin cream on the area to help prevent soreness. Unfortunately, you are going to need to deal with the pain until your nipples heals, which may be frustrating, but you can do it! I had a severly cracked nipple when my bubs was only 3mths I think. It was starting to bleed and was so very sore I was in so much pain feeding. The chemist gave me a cream called Lansinoh which worked wonders and healed my nipple very quickly. You can feed whilst it's on your nipple. It's 100% pure lanolin and hypoallergenic and preservative free. I agree that this sounds like you may be getting your period. Everything sounds normal to me. I think that if you offer the breast more often, your son will nurse more often, which will bring in more milk. Make sure he's latching on well--a certified lactation consultant can help with that. |
