IV BURN on my babys head, the nurse said that she thought it was a birthmark...he is only 2 weeksold,inthenicu


he was born at 32 weeks, because my liver was shutting down..i have hellp syndrome. But they moved my baby from nicu to nim and he got a IV burn while in Nim but the nurse who was suppose to be takin care of him was spending more time with the other 4 babies she had, and they were all (go home) babies, babies on their way home...mine still dont even know how to eat from a bottle or breast yet. she then made the comment that she thought it was a birth mark. the burn is so bad that they had a plastic surgeon come to see him. i took pictures....what else should i do??!! also the burn caused the other side of his head to swell up and retain fluid...which then caused his left eye to also swell and then it got infected and now its goopy and needs to be cleaned almost every hour....should I contact a lawyer about this? this nurse is at fault i would think..

And he might scar up right there and never grow any hair in that spot and its not a small area its the size of my palm

My daughter was born at 32 wks and it took her a little over 2 wks to learn to drink out of a bottle. Give him time and he will get it.
I really don't think you can blame 1 nurse for the injury. There are several nurses that go in and out of the NICU and they all take care of the babys. I would see the hospital being responsible and I would seek out whatever help I could.

yes do you have picts at the hosp. with out the burn? or notes from the stay saying there was a burn ? a pic after ? bring him to your new pediatrician and ask there opinion about what it is then after they tell you you tell them what happened get there advise, will this be a permanent scar? sorry good luck I hope the baby will be fine

that woman needs to not be a nurse. yes, get a lawyer. this is malpractice and could effect his whole life.

I would call a lawyer too, at least get a consult. Trying to PROVE to a judge that it was her fault may be a different story, but if it was my baby I would at least try. Sorry to hear about your little one. My oldest was born at 35 weeks and had to stay in the NICU for a little while. I know how hard it is! Hang in there!

I would call a lawyer. We can't have retarded nurses taking care of our kids.

Contacting a lawyer can't hurt. Also maybe think about getting a consultation with another dr. to see if he/she thinks it's the nurse's fault. Good luck to you, your baby and your family.

Whoa whoa whoa.....I would hold the lawyer talk. You need to speak with the Nurse manager and find out EXACTLY what the so called "IV Burn" is. I wouldn't go freaking out yet until I knew for a fact that it was neglect. We see lots of issues in the NICU that are no fault of the nurse. I find it a bit odd that a NICU nurse would be caring for 5 babies.
It does sound like your baby has some issues that warrant pictures and investigating, but don't jump on the lawyer wagon just yet.
Go be with you child and talk with the nurse manager on that floor.

Premature babies don't learn how to eat on their own for a while. My best friend's son didn't learn until he was 2 months old.
Babies eyes get goopy. That may not be caused by all this other stuff. My son had goop in his eyes until he was 3 months old.
I've never heard of an IV burn. Could it be phlebitis? If that's it, the nurse didn't cause it. That just happens. I can't imagine what in an IV would burn your skin, but still be a fluid that should be in your body.
You need to call the Nurse Manager and get to the bottom of this. I wouldn't be too bossy. Be calm. You catch more flies with honey. If the nurse has made a mistake, the hospital will want to know and investigate just as much as you do. Something that bothers me is the fact that this woman you think was at fault thought it was a birthmark. Sounds like the "burn" as you call it, was already there when her shift started. I wonder if the meds given to premmies by the Respiratory Dept. could have inadvertently caused this. Keep in mind that it takes a certain kind of person to be this kind of nurse and they get into that dept. because of their talent and a HUGE desire to help babies.

i think it depends how far u want it to go. i would start with the patient liaison department and see wha the do to discipline her....if ur not happy, or want a lawsuit, a lawyer.

Yeah I'd call a lawyer just to get a consultation. You'll walk them through what happened and they will tell you if you should seek damages.
