Individual Augmentation Policy?

My husband is in Navy boot camp, he graduates December 7th. He called me on Thanksgiving and was telling me about this policy. He said that he may go to the "desert" sometime in his 5 years he enlisted for. I researched it didnt find to much, I saw that most of the postitons are filled by See-Bees, Nurses/Doctors or Volunteers. Can someone please help me understand this?!

It is called IA duty...Basically they turn a sailor into a soldier... and depending on his rate (job) he could get picked up to be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan...However I wouldn't worry about it since he is just coming out of boot camp and has to go to school and his 1st duty station. Right now they are pulling IA candidates from shore facilities (volunteers) and also people xferring from ship to shore (volunteers and voluntolds) Like I said though I wouldn't worry too much about it and him worry about it either unless they flat tell him he is going. Anytime someone enlists into one of the branches of service there is a strong possibility that they could get deployed to a hotspot in the world.

I came in the Army in 1986 and did about 16 - 17 years without getting deployed until Iraq came along. I was deployed with the 101st for a whole year. It's not that I tried to avoid deployment, it's just that I wasn't assigned to a unit that was going to currently deploy until I went to Fort Campbell.

So, what I am trying to say is that it is the luck of the draw (or bad luck, ....however you look at it) for any of the services. I don't know of any contract that will prevent a soldier, airman, marine, seaman, or whatever ....from ever getting deployed.

There is a very high chance that he will eventually be deployed. But, how many Navy people do you know of that has been killed in Iraq? .... not many. ....be thankful he's not a ground troop like a soldier or marine.

A person enlists into the service to defend their counttry against all enemies, foreign, and domestic. It is a privledge to fight for your country.

Be strong for him and support him with any decision he makes. He will need a strong woman to help him out in times of need.

simply speaking anybody at any time can be called up as an IA, and they may or may not be doing something within their rating.

let me be perfectly clear: ANY RATING can be sent IA. My husband is an IWO and he WILL be going sometime in the next couple of years, period.

if he will be required to kick in doors, he will be sent to train with the Army or Marines beforehand. even if he isn't going to be kicking in doors, he will be sent to train first.
