How does a newly qualified nurse go about volunteering to work in african refugee camps?

I still have another year at uni, but before i go into a full time job and take on commitments, i really wanna volunteer somewhere like Darfur in a refugee camp, how do you do this?

Also, how long do you have to commit to them for? 6 months? a year?

It sounds all very glamorous but unless you have got a very strong constitution and a very strong willpower do not even think about it, without researching it first. I would speak to people who have done it and get a balanced picture trust me it is strictly NOT!! for the faint hart ed but do not let me put you off do your self a favour and check first

Unless you're basically prepared to be compared and trialed to the likes of Mother Saint Theresa, let it go. For your own sanity. I know they need wonderful med workers over there now but if I were you, I'd volunteer with either the Red Cross for disaster relief list or try to find a similar organization in your area akin to one we have here called the Medical Resource Center/Disaster Relief.
It liasons all types of professionals and nonprofs. in time of disaster and flu shot rounds, anything that's needful of good willing med staffers. I'm sure they'd be glad to have you aboard. Should be in with your county government. Call them. They will also need copies of your recent licensure and periodic updates for file. You'll be well utilized, trust me!
And they will be extremely grateful.

You could volunteer with Mercy Ships,they need nurses too,and it can be as short as only 2 weeks..all the best.

You can try going through the catholic church. I have an uncle who is a priest and did missionary missions in africa.

Sign up witht the Peace Corps. I heard it the toughest job you'll ever love.

Contact a Catholic priest in a large parish for assistance.

I agree with jackeline VSO but do research first. Working abroad can be very rewarding I have done it for long enough.
But your medical has to be fine, unfortunately I had anemia.
So I just moved abroad and got a job until I got the job I wanted.
