Anyone hear about the 14 yr old black boy that died at the juvenile boot camp in Florida?

I read in the newspaper that the guards used alot of kicking and punching towards the young boy constantly while a nurse watched. It was also sad that when they made him do 8 laps around the running track and he was short of breath, they covered his mouth and made him inhale ammonia. The boy's mother's lawyer said "You can go to jail for killing a dog, but if a black boy dies, nothing happens." Do you think the guards were guilty of his death?http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/02/17/bootca...

I read this this morning and it just about made me sick. I heard that they actually had them ON TAPE doing these things and still they get off.
PUKE.
Seriously makes me discusted in the legal system.

I was outraged. They should have been found GUILTY! How could the family get awarded 7 million dollars and the guards are found not guilty. I smell racism here. I guarantee you if it was a white kid, it would be different.

Edit: 2 hours of deliberations as well? RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!

probably the guards are giulty

yes and nurse too she saw it all happen

i couldnt believe it and i think the guards are totally guilty

Well they killed him didn't they?

I honestly do not know. Apparently the boy was already ill when he went in. The guards claimed they did what they would of done to anyone else. But I feel that the lawyer brought race into it as an issue with the statement "a black boy". Why not just "a boy" or "a child"

yes!!!! IT NEEDS TO BE ILLEGAL!!!!! OMG I cant believe there not doing anything against it! its wrong to kill anybody nomatter theire race

Not the guards, but the people who thought up the idea in the first place of boot camps for kids. I'd like to see Jeb Bush doing 8 laps.

yES CUSz DAHtSz JUSz HORRiBLE HOW COULD yU EVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE... DO THAT

It really pisses me off when this happens. It's not the first time. Lots of kids have died in those places. I used to be in one of them so I know exactly how the staff behave. I nearly head my head popped off when put in a full Nelson hold by one of them and he clamped down and I was only 13! Yes, they have killed kids, and they have done lots of nasty things you never even heard about, and they are guilty as fkkk.

wht the fu**!!!!!!

wht kinda insanity is this .... who would do such a thing

gimme the names n address of those guards ..

its jus crazy ... white or black .. humans r humans ...

i'm sorry 4 the kid !!

y dont humans stp classifyin peple as white or black !! huh

n it is a fact tht black peple have bigger dics thn white men !

KID ...rest in peace ..

GUARDS .... burn in hell !!

Indeed I do, the guards and nurse alike should be held responsible for the young boy's death.

I firmly believe that these people should suffer the punishment for what they've done and what they let happen, I hope they are happy with what they've done, hopefully they will be punished in the end, or soon at least.

Yes, but since they are positions of power, they can quite literally get away with murder. I have heard similar news reports of police officers shooting people to death even though the victims were just getting out a cell phone or something, yet the police officers didn't face prison time. At most, they would get suspended for a few days and the same thing happened in this case.

If it happened as you describe it the guards are guilty. The problem is, often any incident that has a racial component to it is usually twisted by the media to sensationalize it and attempt to show that racism is still a big problem in America. Look at the Duke "rape case" which turned out to be pure b.s. and the Jena case which is being misreported all over the place. I have yet to read one article about that one that lays out the facts accurately.

Yes they should of been found quilty. This is another example of the rise of the police state. A police officer ran a red light here where I live and hit a 4yr old boy and his Stepdad. This little boy got cut in half. The Stepdad can't walk. You know what the cop got? A 25$ fine. Don't believe . Go to mcall.com

I am very upset to see that the jury came back with a "not guilty" verdict. This is such injustice. I do however believe that if the boy were white, there would have been no difference. I am sick and tired of hearing "because I am black". Point of the matter is, he is dead and the parents need to appeal the decision. Say what you want but I believe those officers are going to get what is coming to them. Michael Vick goes to jail for animal cruelty and these officers get off free? Where is the justice in that? My prayers and with the family.

i heard about it and i am very upset. black or white; short or tall; fat or skinny; girl or boy we r all the same! tht camp honesty shuld have been sued! (maybe it was.. i only heard about wat u told me in the paper) I think this is a bad problem and it shuld be against the law to do something like tht. The problem is, how do we stop people? it is truly upsetting and yes, those stupid guards and the mental and retarded nurse (how can a NURSE do that?!) are guilty! If tht kid had been my son or brother or even FRIEND i would have done something. Now we can only hope for the best.

I'm not surprised at all by the verdict. I live in Bay County...that boot camp is about a mile from my house. There are certain people in the community that seem to run and call all the shots. All you need is that connection around here. Its definatly not what you know but who you know. Alot of people in the media are pulling the race card...that may or may not be the case. There is racism here but no more prevalent than most areas. I feel that media has hyped Panama City to be ridden with racial tension. More than anything, most people are just disgusted with outcome and trying to understand...

I was watching bits and pieces of the actual court hearing on court tv and heard the term copable negligence. I don't know if it was the actual prosecution's argument or not, because it was the reporter's words. They said it because the guards knew this boy was sick with sickle cell disease and what they were doing to him was contributing to his illness. (Sickle cell is prominent in the black race.) This way if it were found that the illness was found to be the actual reason he died, they would still be found guilty. I fell asleep before end of show, oops. It appalls me to find out these guards and nurse got away with this. I saw each one of their faces up close on this show, but that poor child's face will never be seen again. In one of your first answers, I read that the family was awarded 7 (i think) million dollars????? Since the child was no longer available for this family, and the prosecution must have failed its argument, I guess the only option left for the jury was to give the family money? If that is a fact, indeed.
Was it racisim? There was one, if not two black guards of the crew, however, I'm sure they just followed the others in as far as the punishing of the boy. The problem lies within the judical system. This case was not about putting one man behind bars for a crime, but several. Now they are out there and so are other other boot camps allowed to do the same, with nurses that know of diseases these CHILDREN have and the consequences that could happen if pushed to the limit. We take care of structural limits such as bridges when things fail, what about innocent little children's lifes when the system fails? Just as all bridges are examined, so should boot camps be. This pisses me off. These guards and the nurse will see their prosecution another way and it will have a much deeper impact.

no, omg that must have been terrifying

WOW!!!!! I HADN'T HEARD THAT UNTIL YOU SHOWED THE WEBSITE! THAT WOW!! IM SPEECHLESS!!! AND I THINK THAT THE GUARDS MY BE BUT I DONT HAVE MUCH OF AN ANSWER.
