Atheists: do you put great care in your funeral plans?

I was discussing this with my good friend at work today, and she made a joke about her decomposing body and how she would like it to be done in a 'Bucket List-like fashion' (Last line of the movie...'and he was buried on the mountain, which undoubtedly made him happy... because it was illegal.') Sort of like a last hurrah, since she doesn't believe anything happens after bodily death, and a good way to say 'goodbye, suckers!' to the world.

(We're working in security, which leaves a lot of time for extraneous discussion.)

Im 21...my parents do not want to hear me discussing death, especially my own.
Its a touchy subject due my past record of suicide attempts.

Personally, I just want to make sure that my organs and anything else usable is donated upon death.
After that cremate me I suppose.
Perhaps I'd like to do something illegal as well lol.
Yea your friend has a good idea.
I probably wont ever break a law in my life...might as well do it in death :D

YES
No religious content whatsoever.
A party, where my family and friends can have a good time, with plenty of laughing and joking.
Then, cremation.
Then, scatter me on my favourite beach.
The, once a year on my 'deathday', another party on the same beach.
It's the memory that counts.

I told my wife I changed my mind about having a funeral. I want her to invite everyone to my funeral and then when they're all sitting there quietly she should get up in front of them and say, "My husband wanted me to tell you all to get the hell out of here and stop wasting your precious lives at funerals."

I'm not really interested in planning my own funeral. I'd rather leave that to the people who are actually going to be there, as it is for their benefit that a funeral takes place.

Nope. I want to be cremated as I see no sense taking up valuable space. I would love it if my family and friends threw a party (not a funeral), since I'd like for them to celebrate my life and cheer each other up. As for the rest, it's not really up to me I don't think. Whatever my survivors need to do in order to cope is their right to decide.

Funerals aren't for the dead anyway. They are for the living to have their last goodbyes. I do, indeed, hope to have a nice funeral where folks who knew me can discuss my life with others and know of my last days. It will give them closure.

On the other hand, the idea of a thumb-to-the-nose funeral appeals to me in some ways. Matches my personality.

Yep, I've asked for people to be sitting in a circle with my coffin in the middle and 3 stand-up comedians to crack sarcastic jokes about my life. No cremating please for me.

Yes, but it's simple.

As long as there is a disco ball, no religious content, a lot of dancing, and the night ends with everyone going out on a boat and dumping my ashes into the ocean with "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" playing in the background I'm all good.

Cheapest for me please.
We are a not a cash rich family.

Feed me to the dogs after my death, for all I care.
Funerals are for the living. The dead are dead.

Uh Funerals and burring the dead don't have to go hand in hand with religion.

My husband believes in God and believes in Heaven... I will have a catholic burial for him. My family all believes in God, they just don't really practice... they will have a catholic funeral... Me, I don't really care.. I just want a nice coffin, I do still want to be buried in a respectful way... but I could do without the priest... If something happened and I died before my mom or husband or any of my family.. I wouldn't mind them having a religious funeral for me, because it will give them piece of mind...

And just because I don't believe the way they do, doesn't mean that I want to hurt them.

Cremated is what i want to be. Burial is expensive and takes up valuable space. Throw me in a fire or into a chamber of NaOH or for medical study. I don't care. Once i'm dead, I'm dead.

Well...at only later 20s, not yet anyway. I have a file saved on my desktop, labeled "last wishes," that I made up a few summers ago when my parents were going away for two weeks and I just had that thought "what if I choke to death or something while I'm here alone." It's basic, can be changed or added to at any time. But that's as far as I've gone with thinking in that direction.

as a firm believer in the uselessness of churches, I would hope my wishes to avoid them at death is considered. they get none of my time or money while living, and I dont want to start with my death.

I've put thought into it, but only because I have a fun idea of what I want done with my ashes. Besides that, I would prefer it had an open bar. If those who survive me don't go through with any of my plans, I won't care.

My only request is that there are no religious references.

I like your friend's idea. Being buried somewhere unconventional would be cool and not so depressing for your friends and family that want to visit your gravesite.

Funerals aren't necessary, because it is the memories of the good things you did while you are living that matters and lasts on people's hearts.

Cremation is the way to go, because you are already dead and you dont want to be stuck on a wooden container and buried beneath the earth. WHO had thought of using coffins anyway?

I also want to donate any useful parts of my body to someone in need of it.
