For those caring for their elderly parents at home? What are the main challenges?

Do you think it's "worth it"? Or do you recommend a rest home? I know this is a difficult issue, but I am thinking ahead...

It can be worth it, but it is no good if the stress level gets too high. First, have each parent name you in a "Durable Power of Attorney." That is the only real way that you will be able to take care of their health and their finances if they suddenly become incapacitated. (Every adult should have a Durable POA filled out!!!) Second, be prepared to have outside help come in to give you a break. It is hard to find "good help," but you will definitely burn out if you don't get regular breaks during the week and an occasional vacation. There are nice facilities if you choose that route. Make sure to look at the Medicare survey for nursing homes. They are required to post it in a visible place. Medicare also posts their reviews on the net (see link below). (Have each parent draft a DURABLE Power of Attorney no matter what route you all decide on.) Good luck!

Convincing Them that They're Old, and Frail, that They need to Slow Down, and take it Easy!

Personally I would not mind caring for my parents if they ever got old. I just love them too much. It would be their choice to stay with me or go to nursing home. Challenges: I would think hygiene. I am just not that comfortable cleaning others so that part I will have to hire someone. For you, I would say take care of the elders as long as you can until you can't do it anymore due to conflicting schedules or other personal reasons.
