Opinions about abuse of our loved ones (elderly) in health care facilities in Canada.?

Just saw this, I dont know about assisted living, but abuse of the elderly in hospitals is common. There are no homes for them and nursing staff is not adequate or trained to care for the elderly. Those who are ambulatory are restrained in their beds, lying in their own filth, drugged, lights turned off in the middle of the day - in a dark room staring a the wall, unable to move, not able to get up and use a bathroom.

Mom was suffering from dementia and we had neither the resources or the finances to have her at home because she needed fulltime care, and none of us could afford to quit our jobs or pay for fulltime care at home for her.

They are unwashed, never allowed to get up and get dressed, they are too drugged to feed themselves or eat properly. My mother starved to death in Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops BC

I was sent a bill for her stay because BC Medical didnt think they should cover it, I was billed for the day she died, because they said she wasnt "sick enough" to be there, (she died from organ failure, how sick do you have to be?) and for the whole day, because as the clerk told me "she didnt check out until after noon so we have to bill you for the whole day." How inconsiderate of mom to not die before noon --

I live in the U.S., but we do see quite a lot of elder abuse in this country in our Skilled Nursing Facilities, and don't let anybody tell you we don't. You just don't hear about it until someone either dies of it, or a family sues over it.

We have good control over it, when it's known that it's occuring. This is overseen in California, where I live, by the State. We have an Ombudsman responsible for each Skilled Nursing Facility. It's that person's job to see that patient problems are resolved, from the patient's prespective.

If this type of abuse occurs at home, behind closed doors, it is rarely reported. The percentages in my country are very small. We have stern laws against abuse and when it is found, there are some pretty stern jail terms handed out.

Abuse is something that is deplorable, wherever it happens. We have lived our lives, many times in service to those who would abuse us, and we deserve better treatment, all over the world.

before i returned to college I worked in a nursing home for about seven years on the alzheimers and related dementia unit..the 7 to 11 girl was verbally abusive to our residents..she was reported and let go..but i feel she should have been brought up on charges..while i was there working that unit i always took great care of my 15 residents i had and treated them with up most respect and treated them like i treated my grandparents and loved them as much also..i think anyone caught abusing elderly people wheather it be verbal or physical abuse should be sent to jail.
To anyone who works with the elderly, remember to be patient at all times and keep in mind that could be your mom or you dad someday and you wont want them to suffer abuse of any kind

I don't know about Canada but,in the U.S. it horrifies me.I worked in two and would go home in tears most days.I have always loved working with the elderly.I'll never go back to work in one.Family members bring in their parents and forget about them.
