Why Adult Children should take care of Elderly parents, instead of placing them in retirement homes!?

Help plzz! anyone.. i need this for my speech class and it's due in like 6hrs! any help i'd appericate it. Thanks!

I Am against it. I want ppl to take care of elderaly parents... but i need more detial! it's for speech class! thx.

1. Cost. Many elderly people did not realize that long term institutional care would even be a possibility for them, so they did not plan for the expense. There is insurance available for that now, but they wouldn't have had access to it when they were younger. At their older age, they would not be able to afford quality nursing care, and sub-standard care is just not an option for parents or family that you care about.

Health care in this country is in dire need of reform. If we start with long term care, this would be a great way to cut some of the cost of health care, providing more funds for the indigent and terminally ill.

2. Quality of Life- The quality of life in a nursing facility, even the higher standard ones, is just not the same as it is in a nurturing, family environment. In the extended family unit, Grandparents are treated with respect and have memories and family ties that bind them to the other members of the household.

Not so in an institutional setting. In a hospital, the employees are paid staff who, in some cases, are caring individuals, but who have no true family bonds with the patients and who will offer them no real connections.

There are fewer opportunities for socialization, interpersonal relationships and other activities when confined to one room, as in a hospital. In a real home, the elderly person interacts regularly with members of the family, can go shopping and be involved with all activities on a regular basis.

3. Some studies have shown that the mental regression of hospitalized patients increases more rapidly than that of ones that live at home. The likely cause is more interaction with family members with whom the elderly person has intimate bonds, triggering memories in the brain, and causing the brain to "fire" and be stimulated. Any such activity will help keep the brain active, potentially staving off Alzheimer's and other forms of geriatric dementia.

4. Respect and Honor-- The elderly in many countries are treated as revered members of society, because of the wisdom and life experiences they can share with the younger members of the village or tribe. Not so in this country, where youth is valued over most all things. If the trend can ever change to a more respectful attitude toward the elderly members of our society, it should begin with allowing them to live with us, and for us to learn from the wisdom that they have.

They have fought wars, raised children and helped to raise grandchildren. They have seen history in the making, Presidents come and go, and have so many stories to tell that are ours for the taking, if we just stop long enough to listen.

We cannot take advantage of this valuable resource if we shuttle the elderly members of our families away in nursing homes like disposable products of our society. They are not disposable; they are truly a treasure.

(These are just some ideas for you to throw around in your head for your speech. I hope it helps some! Come back and let us know how your speech went. Good luck!!)

Placing them in retirement homes is one way to take care of them.
Many need the specialized professional care that they can only get in these places.

its the right thing to do
your parents sacrificed everything and took care of you
now its your chance to repay the favour

If you're defending the position that adult children should take care of their parents, you can talk about family love and devotion, the possibility of abuse and neglect in nursing homes (you might have to research that one on the Net), the fact that nursing homes are expensive, and quality of life issues when parents remain at home.

If you're defending the position that nursing homes are better, you can talk about the high rates of stress involved with caring for elderly parents, that adult children may be attempting to provide care that they're not qualified to provide (which can even be dangerous), the need for real 24-hour care, and so on.

Good luck.
.

when u become elderly, would you want your kids to send you to a retirement home?
y y not?

Because they are the only reason you entered this world - and exist in it - otherwise you would never be. Atleast for that, you owe it to them.
