If I wanted to give up work to care for elderly parents what help would I get financially?

Would I recieve any benefits? it would be both parents and possibly they would move in with me.

thanks for all the great help and advice (apart from goldwing)

You would get carers allowance. its about 拢40 a week, provided your parent were on the right benefits for you to qualify for it.
Your parents would get whatever income they had.
your council tax would go up if you live alone at the moment.
You could earn a bit of money as well, but only about 拢60 a week I think. You have to be a carer for at least 35 hours a week.
You may get income support if you dont do any other work, but Im not sure so youd need to check that one with welfare rights or cab. Its about 拢57 at the moment.
Depending on what money your parents have, you may get some housing or council tax benefit (assuming your mum and dad are on a low income.
Welfare Benefits, or CAB can give you the exact figures.

well you can get registered as their carer then you should be able to claim a carer's allowence for both of them.

Your so nice!

If you're in the UK you might be entitled to Carers Allowance, but it isn't very much. Contact your local benefits office to double check.

You would get financially...... Screwed.

Unless that is your elderly parents decided to sign over their S.S. checks or retirement income.

Have fun with the role reversal.

Not much, unless you're prepared to fight like hell. Even carer's allowance is a pittance.

as long as you don't earn more than 87 pound a week, you would get about 45 pounds, cash of course there are other things, but no more money, best place to look is

well harry ,i did it first for my mum and six years later me dad, you will get a careres, allowence, and also support from the social servises, and you will get attendance allowence, and if you care for them at night as well as day it is more you will get,iff you need any advice only to willing to help, lynn x,and i must say i admire you for looking after your parents,

Depends what country you are in.

Each local authority should now have a 'Supporting People Team ' you should go and speak to them before you do anything! There are a number of options, and moving them in with you could be a good one, but you need to think very carefully before giving up work because it could easily leave you financially worse off. They take into account your saving and property, and only people who earn very little can be eligible for a decent amount of money - a lot of the benefit system is based on 'the minimum required to survive' - it is often better to retain your earning, and apply for visiting help & support. Speak to your council before you take any definitive action.

The only benefits you are going to get are from your parents...hopefully they are wealthy. Otherwise, you are all going to starve.

If your parents qualify for medicaid or if they have insurance, it might pay for a caregiver in your home. You could be that caregiver and get paid an hourly wage based on the assessment of your parents needs by a licensed agency.

Agencies that provide care for the disabled and elderly normally advertise in newspapers and are listed in the phone book in your area (I don't even know what country you are from, I live in Alaska, USA.

Ok, so it's you, ginger that lives in Alaska. For some reason I thought it was Belinda B.

What's it like up there? Is it cold?

You would get Carers Allowance topped up with Income Support. Its not a lot, between the 2 benefits I had 拢80 a week. It will have gone up a wee bit since I last had it, my husband had a 3rd stroke last September and he didn't make it. Get in touch with your local Welfare Rights and they will help you get everything you are intitled to. Good Luck.
