I just started taking care a elderly man and he diabetic? |
I need to know what kind of food he has to eat or what kind of diet I have to keep him in.. I would like some help He could have different kinds of dietary restrictions. You really should speak with is doctor. Someone who taking insulin or insulin production stimulating drugs are going to have different needs than someone who is just using diet and/or exercise or other medications. Most everyone will benefit from a diet that includes fresh vegetables, poultry, fish and very lean meats, fruit and whole grains in moderation. He may also need to be on a low sodium diet. If he has kidney problems he may need to be on a low sodium diet. Scheduling an appointment with a dietician and/or attening a diabetes and nutrition class might be helpful. You can attend a class alone or with him if his health permits. God bless you for caring. really depends on what kind of diabetes he has have you talked to his famly or family physician? they can let you know what his special needs are Good Luck I took care of a diabetic for 3 years. My lady had/needed 3 good balanced meals a day. Also needed snacks between meals and at bedtieme. She was on insulin. Snacks were a protein (meat-salmon patties) and sugar free jello or pudding. My little lady was a very "brittle" diabetic. (I used to tell her if I looked at her crossed-eyed, her sugar would change) You may need to try different things to see what he can tolerate. You will not learn overnight. A lot will depend on him--how willing and helpful he is. I used to do blood sugars sometimes 4 or more times a day. Without specific questions and knowing the patient--it is hard to advise. You will learn as you go. Good Luck Please attend a diabetic class -- your local hospital should have information and times. These classes are usually 1 or 2 days and are filled with loads of information for both the person with diabetes and the one taking care of diabetics. Both my son and husband have this disease and we attend these classes as a family approximately every year as there are usually many updates in the available information. Best of luck . |
