Elderly dog care?

my dear pooch is 14 now. she has a paralyzed larynx. she also limps on one foot when it's cold because of some arthritis. she is still pretty lively, which in some cases is the problem. sometimes she runs herself so hard around our property, that her larynx starts acting up and her breathing gets labored. she thinks she's still a pup. her eyesight AND hearing are both going slowly. i just want to know if there are any ways i can make her last days/weeks/months/years as peaceful and comfortable as possible. is there anything that i might feed her to help her? is there anything else i can do? i really care about her and she is definetly my baby. so can u help me?

no actually i'm in the u.s. we went to the vet when she first started having problems, and he didn't expect her to live a month. it's been about 5 now. so we're very happy. thanks!

I would wait up on getting another (new) dog, and just spend time with her! There is really nothing that you can give to her, just give her yourself. Be there for her. It's so hard to loose our pets. When I do things with the dog that I have now, I go back in time and remember doing this or that with my other ones. They are all special.

Firstly are you in the U>K>? secondly if your baby struggles with breathing you could ask the vets to supply you with a mask and a bottle of oxygen it does help the aged ones please seek this answer from your vet...hope you have a good one ! god luck and best wishes

Fish oil is a good supplement that has anti-inflammatory properties for the arthritis and is also just really all around good for dogs. That along with a high quality kibble and perhaps a pain reliever like Rimadyl (although there is a safer one on the market now I can't think of what it's called) to help her through the rough days. If pills are a problem for her because of her larynx it does come in an injectable form.

I dont know what you can do about the larynx... it may be from wearing a choke collar or pulling too much when younger...

a lot of health problems in older dogs are also the result of what they were fed when younger... chemicals build up in the body over time and the negatives show up when they are old...
here is a link you can read - its simple to understand and short enough to be worth reading

http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/What-is-in-...

it will tell you if your food contained problem ingredients - and you can see it mentions feeding Glucosamine/Chondroitin for older dogs to help with joints (and other things mentioned too)
