Why have 100s of illegal immigrants without criminal record checks been allowed to work in elderly care homes?

Mike, I work in an assessment unit for the nhs. we assess patients with dementia to see what care they need when the family cant cope any more. I had to escort one to a nursing home with his wife to see if she liked it and there were immigrants working there.
they spoke very broken English. I was absolutely disgusted with the fact that they worked there.
Now before anyone plays the race card, it was not because of their race. It was the fact that they should not have been working in an area like that.
Old people with dementia can be at all different levels of their sad illness. The further on they are the limited their understanding of what people are saying to them is. Also it is harder for them to express themselves. Even in the early stages when they can still have a conversation with you they could suffering from deafness and can often become confused what you are saying to them.
These people could not understand English properly let alone the broad Scottish accent of the old people up here in the north, especially as we have our own dialect as well.
They became impatient with them, kept saying to them...."what?" and "i not understand you".
now if that was a patient asking for the toilet as some of them have their own way of asking.....there could have been an accident if another carer had not come along and seen to him.
i think it is ridiculous. our old people are going thru the worst stage of their lives and need reassurance and help , not someone shrugging their shoulders and walking off.
and if you got rid of them they would play the card. The reason is that nursing homes pay less that the nhs homes. a lot of people will not work a twelve hour night shifts for basic wage as they dont get any overtime payment for that.
put them in jobs like factory conveyor belts untill they can speak proper english.
in fact they should not be allowed in unless they can talk our language anyway.
once again..................political correctness before pensioners from a government that doesn't care.

Cybercom.....what a disgusting thing to say...who cares who looks after granny? i would have cared who looked after my mum. it is distressing enough putting your loved ones into a nursing home as it is without thinking they are not being cared for properly. and it isnt all about being dressed and having your hair combed. it is most importantly about their mental well being and the fact that they need to be comforted sometimes with nice words.

4moneygirl......what do you mean this work is nasty?...... it is not...i love my job. it fulfills me and there are no better people to care for than the aged. they are lovely, caring. funny, and vulnerable. all they want is to be loved and looked after. and they love when we give them hugs and kiss them goodnight when we put them to bed. hold their hands when they are dying and have no relatives. what is nasty about that? blowing up people is nasty not looking after them.

They'll give the job to anyone who'll do it and not complain. And the British are the inventors of dumping old people.

It is because illegal immigrants now have more rights than the people that were originally in that country. An original would need criminal record checks but illegal immigrants don't. That annoys the heck out of me! One of my friends years ago applied for a job at a care home and was turned down for not being suitable, there was nothing at all wrong with the girl either! Still she did better in the end got a good job!
We are a country that has been turned upside down and inside out and are confused as to whats right anymore i think!

The fact that this is happening is truly frightening, but I understand why it's happening. The Home Office must be aware that most care homes are chronically understaffed because the hours of work are unsociable, the pay is very low and many cannot face the nature of the duties to be carried out. If you run such a home and are desperately trying to find staff for 24-hour cover, it must be very tempting to resort to this illegal employment. Those carers who actually stay with their employers and do a good job are worth their weight in gold, yet they receive little reward. If the job profile could be raised, or if Brits started looking after their own elderly relatives, then the problem wouldn't exist. (Although I realise there will always be a need for care homes, as some elderly need care beyond that which the family can give, but the numbers in care would be lower).

Because no one in government gives a stuff about what happens to the elderly here. In fact no one gives a stuff about anything to do with the running of the country, thats why its turning into a third world hell hole with crime and everything vile on the way up.

Don't believe government figures about crime rates and immigration figures Mike because the only thing those B's do well is lie.

The poor old people have always been a neglected sector but never more than now. If they are ill treated and complain its put down to old age.

And as for the "no British person will wipe backsides for minimum wage" tack, thats garbage. I know many local people in my small Welsh valleys village who work in care homes, around here jobs are few and far between and some people just have to take what they can get, especially mothers with children trying to fit work in around their families. Its only snobby middle class Little Englanders who feed the "Brits won't do dirty jobs so we need immigrants" myth.

ETA: I totally agree with Elsie - these elderly people are someone's mother, father, grannie, grandad, uncle, brother, sister etc and deserve to be well treated. At least when local people are looking after them there will not be communication difficulties, in fact in this valleys community, the elderly people have lived here all their lives and their carers are probaby the grandchildren of people they know so there is an element of familiarity. To put them in the hands of someone who can't speak proper English and doesn't care about them is unforgiveable. Also if these illegals don't have criminal records checks whats to protect these deeply vulnerable old people from exploitation, bank account details being stolen and used fraudulently etc? I shudder to think.

I guess the reason the Government do it is because its cheap.

ETA2: Just read the Times article and this made me feel sick:

Shows how the Government are happy to place our most deeply vulnerable people in danger just so they can save a few bob and avoid having to pay a decent wage to properly trained and vetted care staff, eh?

The illegal immigrants will continue to corrupt America. We allow anyone to come in here, pop out babies like machine guns, (bonus check for welfare, which means more money) and allow anyone born here to become automatic U.S. citizens. Think of the U.S. as a small jar. Think of the world as a massive glass container. The marbles represent the people...as long as you try to put more and more in from the large jar (represents the entire world), to the small jar (U.S.), eventually, it will start overflowing. That is what is happening...overpopulation is HUGE right now. The rate we are going at, we won't ever be able to build enough roads, houses, schools, hospitals, etc., the way we are growing. The economy is bashed every single year. I have no idea how much the budget is for illegals, but it has to be billions, even trillions of dollars. They come here, get free food, health care, rob from Social Security, live off of welfare. The more kids they have, the more checks they get, so why not have eight to ten kids? The financial burden is horrible...no telling how many trillions these illegals are costing us yearly. How do we stop this crisis? Well, just take the benefits away. If we didn't have all the FREE things to offer, they wouldn't be coming here. The education...HAVE ALL BOOKS IN ENGLISH. Don't let the illegals get college education...take them back to Mexico if they can't get citizenship (it's not like it's hard in the first place...it may be a long process, but not hard.) The unemployment rates will continue to rise because they come here, don't work or anything, get everything for FREE, so why should they work...they just get everything handed to them in the first place. If they get paid to sit on their butts eating burritos all day instead of working, why not? Bringing more people in to take jobs...BS! If a legal U.S. citizen needs a job bad enough, he/she will do whatever they have to do to get that extra money.

How can illegal immigrants be ok- lets just be illegal with everything should we? Also many of the bunch of illegals have actually committed crimes before. It is a disgrace. If anybody reads the Times online- they will see just how bad the government is. Many of the answerers seem to think illegal criminal immigrants are something to be proud of- glad it's not my parents they are looking after.

An even better question is: Why are illegal immigants not arrested? Crossing the border without a passport is a felony.

well, i think about it this way. all the immigrants want is a better life and there is a such thing as good people. and its pretty dumb to get upset that the immigrants are here. all they want are jobs, food, and a place live. well mabe if some people had gotten off their butts the jobs and house wouldnt be up for grabs..and if you think about it were all kinda immigrants. you dont know where youre great great great great great great great grandmother was born and if she moved somewherew else

Does it matter? They are most probably doing a very good job.
This is no more than political point scoring by rabble rousing politicians who use emotive phrases to create problems where there was no problem to start with.
