Why, in a world of sicker horror movies, war, etc., is a mother nursing her child looked at as obscene?

Delta Airlines have done it again! A woman nursing her child was removed from the flight. Maybe she should have put fake blood on her breast and smeared it on her and the child. Perhaps that would have been more "natural"?

I honestly don't get it but it's absolutely absurd and demeaning to women. Our bodies are built to care for and nurture children and when that is taken away from us and deemed dirty, well that's the ultimate insult to womanhood and motherhood.

Amen

Great Question! With all that's acceptable in today's society, how can the nourishing of a child by the mother be viewed as naughty or embarassing!! Especially with the airlines and their mile high clubs and stewardess reputations!

Nursing a baby is a natural extension of pregnancy and shouldn't be looked at as a perverted act. Unfortunately western civilization has turned into that and I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done about it... It's sad.

If she had her breast exposed I understand.. I have a 5 year old son, and I wouldn't want him seeing that. It's ridiculous that she would be breastfeeding a 2 year old anyways.. None of us want to see that.. It's called pump the milk out if she's that determined to Breastfeed a toddler.. Be considerate of us too!!

i hear ya! i am in Toronto and a lot of mall bathrooms have nursing areas like anyone wants to eat in a bathroom. i personally covered my breast with a blanket only because there are a lot of perverts out there that want to watch. it's a catch 22

I don't think it is looked at as obscene, I just think it makes some people uncomfortable. I know my husband is uncomfortable because he doesn't want the person nursing to think he is trying to look.

I don't think the woman should have been asked to leave the plane, but if others were uncomfortable, should she have possibly covered up? I know that it is her right to nurse in public and I agree that she should be able to, but I also believe that my rights end where anothers begin.

As to the comment about the blood, people are not put in a position to watch horror movies without prior consent, but if a woman chooses to nurse where others are confined with her, they loose their choice.

Are you talking about the mother who refused to cover up her almost TWO year old breastfeeding or is this another story? A 2 year old nursing in this society is not natural and it certainly should not be done in public. She was asked to cover up and refused.

Political correctness seems to be a virtue in this society. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink

She refused to cover herself. I'm glad they threw her off. In this country you don't walk around undressed. So to use her baby as a reason to flop it on out there was too much. She refused a blanket to cover with. I nursed 3 children and always covered up. The last thing I would have wanted was some nasty man looking at my chest! Breastfeeding was a time for me and my child, not for a political statement or flashing the strangers around me.

I think it's because our culture only sexualizes a woman's breast. They are looked at as something only for men to oogle or play with, not as the food source for a growing child. People act like you're taking a dump in public! Most women I've seen breastfeeding in public are very discreet and keep themselves partially covered. I just saw some gawd-awful nay-nay shot's of momma Britanny Spears yesterday and I'm sure the media thinks that's less obsence than if they'd caught her breastfeeding!!

I think it all depends upon how exposed this woman was ~ if you are being discreet than by all means nurse - but, if you have our blouse undone and the whole boob exposed for all to see than I think it is wrong.

I am sorry, but I disagree! As much as EVERY women does have the right to breast feed, EVERY women has the right not to. I don't care what other women do, but NO I do NOT want to explain what is going on to my 14 month old. I did not breast feed, and I do not believe in it, no one in my family does. It's OUR choice! I think some women do need to be more conservative with it. I have seen women just fling it out like it's an arm and I was VERY offended. If that's what the women was doing, or if she would not cover up, then YES she should be removed. I also as a mother have the choice to block TV channels, and chose check out lanes by whats in them, and stores by their content. If I can do all that to provide an environment that I agree with, why should I not have the right to sit on a plan and not have a breast in mine or my child's face? Think of both sides before you freak out.

I sometimes wonder if these stories don't get blown out of proportion. Honestly...if the woman was nursing, covered, etc, it shouldn't have been a problem. Now, if she just had it all hanging out there, she was probably asked to cover up. If she was seriously removed from the flight, something tells me she was asked to cover, refused and got hostile. Happens all the time. A woman wouldn't be asked to leave a flight for simply and discreetly feeding her child. Some people are offended by a woman's bare breast, which is understandable. And most woman who whip out their breast and nurse w/out covering are offended when someone is offended by them. Nursing is natural...but so is going to the bathroom and we don't do that for all to see. My question is this...why do so many nursing mothers try to cause a stir by whipping their breast out for all to see? Cover up! And for Pete's sake, if you don't normally cover in public, have the courtesy to do so when asked. It's common courtesy. That's just my opinion...but you asked!! ;)

breast feeding is the most natural thing in the world it is sad to me that more women don't breastfeed it is the healthiest choice for your child and it is more convenient no cleaning bottles warming up the milk preparing formula accidentally leaving bottle at home i breastfeed my first child and had to bottle feed my last one my last child had inner ear infections the whole first year the doctor said it was from being bottle fed i recommend breastfeeding if you are able to because it helps you and the baby both if i hadn't breast fed my oldest i probably wouldn't be here today because i hemorrhaged and him breastfeeding kept my uterus contracting so that the bleeding slowed down til i could get to the hospital

There are so many thing wrong here in America. Violent images and bad language are acceptable, but a bit of nudity is COMPLETELY unacceptable. This is so strange. It does not make one bit of sense to me. I can understand how some men would feel uncomfortable around someone who is breastfeeding, but a woman? This also makes no sense. Why do people fear nudity so much. We all know this is the root cause. Its not the act of a mother feeding her child.

Breastfeeding is best for the baby, this has been proven. A mother should be able to breastfeed her baby anywhere she needs to. To hinder this only hurts the baby. You can not reason with a baby. When they are hungry, they are hungry.

To all you "Cover up" people, have you NURSED A BABY?

Seriously my baby won't nurse if my shirt is touching him. Let alone blocking him off with a blanket. And in the beginning when latch was tough, I sometimes had my nipple out a long time over and over again just to get him to eat. Every baby has a right to eat whenever they are hungry.

And exactly why do you think women "flop it all out", to get attention of men? Because they want attention? You think they are just using it as an excuse? Seriously if they wanted to be practically naked there are ways of dressing that way without carting a baby around as an "excuse".

You know Muslims, the one who wear Burkas who think it is obscene to see a woman's HAIR, breastfeed in public with nary a thought about covering up. Breasts are for feeding babies, and according to one news article I was reading: Muslims consider not nursing a baby an affront to God.

If the people sitting beside the nursing mother were really sooo deeply offended, surely the flight attendants could have switched their seats around. Actually that is probably exactly why the person complained, they didn't want to sit near a baby so they figured if they complained about the breastfeeding they could get a new seat.

First off, Everybody should ban Delta. 2nd. I hope these women sue. They have no right to tell a women not to nurse her child. As women we should write them and tell them our mind.

Are you referring to the lady that was feeding the 2 year old and refused to cover up? I think that is going a little far, but I agree that breastfeeding should not be viewed as obscene. That is what breasts are naturally intended for, to feed our young. I do not understanding how feeding a child is disgusting. On top of that, I will NOT feed my daughter in a little closet or a bathroom. THAT is disgusting. I ma not going to run around with my boob hanging out though, there are ways to be discreet.
