Is my cousin being paranoid or does he have a right to worry?

My cousin and his mom are diabetics and on the regular get their blood sugar tested.

In early 2006, my cousin was walking through his house when he accidently stepped on a open (and possibly) used lancet (which are needles used in blood sugar tests) with his barefoot. Because of this he thinks that he could possibly have HIV/AIDS (and if not that, some other bloodborne illness).

Due to the fact that he and his mom are diabetics and are the only two people in the house, there is a possibility that possibly used lancet belonged to his mom or him OR it could be possible that lancet somehow became loose.

When he told my mom (who is a professional nurse) about the situation, she said that he possibly didn't have anything to worry about, mainly because of the fact he nor his mom are infected with HIV/AIDS (and you can get the disease only from an infected person, right?).

Still what do you think about the story? Is he just being paranoid or not?

Yes, he's being paranoid. If the lancet wasn't used by anyone with HIV, you won't be able to get HIV/AIDS from it even if you stepped on it a dozen times. Since he & his mom were the only people whose lancet it can be right there inside their own home, he's fine.

I am also a nurse. And if both mother and son are not infected with the hiv virus it would be highly impossible to be infected with the virus. I would be more worried about injury to the foot. infections or sores. Always take care of your feet, ware slippers or shoes and check feet for any infection or open areas.
