Paranoid about HIV? |
Im a student nurse and im paranoid about getting HIV from my patients. I know the risk is none to very low...but I cant stop thinking about it...like last week I had to change the bed of an HIV patient...the bed was full with blood and even though I used a gown and double gloves am paranoid that I have HIV now...can I get it....if not why am I so anxious and cant wait to get tested...Why is this??? Please help.... in my head am like...oh my god what if something got in my eye or mouth....argh You cannot get HIV by using the precautionary techniques you mentioned, such as wearing a gown and double gloves. You also cannot get it by using the same toilet seat as they do, being coughed on by them, or having casual contact with them (being touched, hugged, or lightly kissed). The only way you can have a chance of getting it is by having unprotected sex with them, sharing needles with them, or having their blood come in direct contact with an open sore on you (even then, your chances of getting it are slim). You're correct you are paranoid. Please research HIV and get all the information you can to educate yourself. HIV is only spread through bodily fluids. Also HIV dies upon contact with air. If you had a large open wound in which an HIV patients blood (and a substantial amount) made contact with that wound would you then be at risk. Saliva is not a risk factor. But semen is. You are not at risk in the work that you have described doing. If this is going to be an increasing issue for you perhaps a different career field would be best. |
