I called about HIV test. nurse said that my test needed to be reviewed and... i want to cry?

My doctor is away and will be back on monday- i called to get the results of my test because i had gotten all my results over the phone on wednesday of my other tests. SHe told me that she was meaning to call and let me know my results were in...

BUT my dr. needed to review them and my doctor would personally call me on monday and to stay by the phone.

I know this nurse personally and she would have said things are okay call if you need us

if i was HIV negative.

oh God. Help.

Monday seems so far away

I have never done any drugs, and i am not a whore....

OK, first off, calm down. Take a deep breath and get a drink of water. What happened does NOT necessarily mean the results are bad.

There are very strict laws about who can reveal HIV test results to patients, whether they are positive OR negative. It may just be against the law (or against the rules of your doctor's practice) for a nurse to give the results out over the phone.

Next, your doctor may have a policy of wanting to look the results over himself before they are given out. Some doctors do that.

Even if the test IS positive, there can often be a false positive, and sometimes they want to repeat the test or check using another testing method to make sure.

RELAX. Your mind can play tricks with you and get you all scared when something like this happens, and most of the time everything is FINE. The chances of you contracting HIV are small, even if you've had unprotected sex with someone who has it! Most people don't realize this. Although it's possible to contract HIV from one exposure, it's not likely. Most of the people who get it have had chronic exposure to the virus over time.

So again, RELAX. You're probably fine. Spend the weekend doing something active to get your mind off of this, and the time will fly by. See if you can answer 100 questions on here between now and Monday!!

Legally nurses and recpetionists are not allowed to give results over the phone without a doctors OK first.
Don't panic yet!

Don't worry. Call them back and ask more questions. Let them know your concerns. But also realize that they may have additional information they want to give you in person.

Results are not supposed to be given out over the phone due to the HIPAA act. You should be getting your results in person from the dr, not the nurse.

Please remember that even if it is positive, there is a chance it is a false positive. The dr will review it and let you know if further testing is needed.

If you have never done drugs, that is good. You don't have to be a whore to be HIV positive. One time with unprotected sex with the wrong person can do it. But worrying about it won't make it any better, or worse. Try and relax and time will pass. Prayer is the best thing. Prayer for forgiveness, for salvation and prayer that God will have mercy on you and spare you this disease.

Hi,

Sometimes due to Hippa guidelines, health care workers can't share certain information even if they do know us personally. HIV may be one of those tests that you can only get results passed on to you by your doctor. So, don't panic and don't give up. There is always hope. On the other hand, if you do get a negative answer - (that you don't have HIV) - please be careful. Unfortunately you can't trust anyone, even if you think you know them well. Be sure and be safe. You can email me if you need someone to talk to. norgus9@yahoo.com

I am sorry I dont wana scare you but something's up. I am a medical technologist and i do HIV testing all the time. We dont inform patients who are initially reactive until we get to verify the result. verifying it would mean running the test twice and ordering a confirmatory testing that uses more elaborate method. Most of the patients who are initially reactive would come up postive on the repeat tests. Let's just hope that the reagents were contaminated on the initial run, which doesnt happen all the time.

Oh, honey, can I sympathize! I went through the same thing, and I have wasted 13 years worrying! Do not worry another second, get busy with your life, and arrange to see the doctor on Monday, and being afraid is pointless; it will NEVER be as bad as you think it will be!

There are not allowed to give results over the phone, only doctors are. I had a mammogram that came back with something on it (benign) and they wouldn't tell me anything over the phone, they made me come in to get more testing. The doctor probably just wants to give you your results and counsel you at the same time about it. Not meaning you have it, but trying to prevent you from getting it by giving you knowledge. Things will be ok. I don't think anything is wrong. I think they just customarily counsel anyone who has that type of testing.
