Rebandaging a cut?

Yesterday I cut my finger with a bread knife and ended up having to go to A&E. The nurse sealed it with that medical glue stuff and closed it up with steristrips. She then put a thick pad on it and wrapped it up with a bandage and a stretchy sticky fabric bandage to keep the other bandage on. She said it should be safe to remove it next Saturday.

It's quite frankly driving me mad right now. It doesn't hurt but my skin is all irritated where the sticky stuff is in contact with my skin (I've had similar problems with medical tape too). I really want to take the damn thing off and let it air out for a while, but I'm pretty scared to as the cut was deep and it was bleeding very profusely, the last thing I want to do is end up getting it infected. I have a first aid kit with me that's full of all the stuff I need.

What do you suggest? That I just deal with it until it's ready to come off or that I try to change the bandage?

You should be safe changing it. Just do not remove the steri-strips. They are designed to come off when the cut has healed. They will also hold the wound closed while you change the bandage.

It will bother you a lot more if it gets infected or opens back up. The tape and extra padding helps prevent further injury, too. Wrap the whole thing with a little more gauze and suffer through this until Saturday.

You should go back to the hospital and they will change the dressing to something that will not irritate your skin

if its really itchy take the bandage of but do not disturb the steristrips what ever you do then have a little scratch and put antiseptic ointment over the strips and cover up well again remember to wash your hands the best you can first ..hope you get better soon

Go to your nearest walk in centre and let them have a look at it for you.

Know what you mean, I am also allergic to medical tape. Is it possible for you to remove the tape from your dressing thus removing it from your skin and just tape on top of the bandage so it isnt touching your skin. Steristrips shouldnt do it because they are especially made for over the wound. You could always go to your local chemist and see what they suggest, they may recomend a finger stall.

If you are that uncomfortable you have little choice, it may also be that you are allergic to either the glue or the tape. If you can hang off until the morning I am sure your practice nurse could help. If not, gently remove the dressing, put on a simple dry cover and then see her in the morning.

go your surgery and explain about the irritation and a nurse or doctor will see to it for you. if you are allergic to the dressing the sooner you get it seen to the better go get it sorted

The nurse should have checked if you were allergic to the tape before she put it on. I'm a nurse and we always ask before we apply a plaster or tape. You should get it changed as soon as possible.
