Son bumped his head twice in same spot? |
my son who will be 17 months old on july 3rd...bumped his head while we were at universal studios last sunday...I took him to first aid and he had a huge bump outside his head with bruising all around it...the nurse said it's better out than in and just gave his tyneol, tried to give him ice but he refused and she said he will be fine....the next day the swelling went down and he just had a big ole' bruise....yesterday, he fell and hit his head again in the SAME SPOT...this time he bruised it more and he has a cut on it(like a tiger claw scratched him) it was bleeding so i did the neosporin and a bandaid and he was his usual self 10 minutes later...today when he woke up, the blood is just dried now and he is still playing and being himself...now i know my son better than anyone else but some of my friends say you should take him yo the doctors...what do you think? and what would you do? Trust your instincts. If your son is behaving normally, there is no need to take him to the doctor. Watch for signs in his speech and his movements - if he is walking normally, and talking normally, you shouldn't worry. Make sure there is no fever, and there is no bleeding in the ears. Also check his eyes with a regular flashlight to see that the pupils are dilating properly. Also, watch his sleeping patterns. He shouldn't be sleeping any more than usual. If he seems extremely sleepy or lethargic, you should call the doctor. But if that all seems normal, he doesn't have a concussion, and there is no need for a visit to the doctor. Just to be sure, I would call your sons doctor and talk to one of the on call nurses, they will tell you to bring him in or not, But if he is sleeping and eating ok, seems happy, and is acting like himself, I wouldn't worry, he is probably fine. He should be fine, but the usual rule after any type of thing like this is not to let your child go to sleep b/c of the possibility of a concussion. Signs of a concussion are unusual eye movements or pupils that are unequal in size; persistent vomiting; or excessive sleepiness. Depending on your baby's age, look for a change in how he crawls or walks; weakness or confusion; or problems with speech, vision, or motor skills. There is also always a risk of a skull fracture. Signs of a possible skull fracture: A large, soft area on the scalp, especially on the side of the head (above or behind the ear); blood showing in the whites of his eyes; or pinkish fluid or blood draining from his nose or ears. You can call your doctor's office and ask them for their advice, but you are probably right. If the cut wasn't gaping, then he doesn't need stitches and bumps on the head usually look worse than they are. Ever heard of the term goose egg? They can get pretty big. He doesn't sound like he's exhibiting any signs of a concussion. I think you're handling it just fine, and congrats on being calm! While the skull is quite tough it isn't terribly difficult to damage it, particularly in children. If he seems fine I'd say there's probably nothing wrong with him but a doctor's visit would be the safest thing you could do. trust your own instincts. i've had similar things happen to my kids. I didn't feel their bumps required a doctors visit, and they were just fine. If your not worried and feel all is well with him, then he should be just fine without having to see a doctor. you should at least call your doctor or talk to an advice nurse. they may suggest that you take him in, but if he had a concussion or damage you would notice by now. some signs of concussion can be headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. he could also be acting more fussy and not playing. So he's got a bump on his bump? It sounds exactly like what I go through with my children and the only thing you really need to be worried about is whether he has a concussion or not......and he probably doesn't being as he didn't fall off of something or nothing fell on him. Just to be safe, you should watch his pupils and make sure they don't dialate and also watch him to see if he is acting lethargic. Otherwise he will play like a normal child and probably even bump his head a few more times in the same spot before it heals. |
