We are trying to figure out the best thing to do to get our friend to be able to be in US legally.?

10 years ago my spouse had a severe stroke, We had been "surviving" He fell and broke his impaired leg three months ago and was in the hospital three months, and cannot walk w.o. assistance now. I cannot afford to quit work (I am 50 he is 60) I do not want to put nor can I afford tto put him in a nursing home. A friend of ours from Europe agreed to come here and live with us and help me. He was told by travel agency there he did not need a visa so he came on the VWP. Now we are trying to figure out how we can get him permission to stay. He is not a HCW but my husband basically needs just someone here in case he needs basic help. Like assistance to get up to the commode. I make average salary and cannot afford a aid to come and be with him and our friend will do it for room and board and small amount of money. Any help would be appreciated.

It's really sad and I'm so sorry you're in such bad situation. But I don't think there's anything you can do about it, legally.

The problem is, your case is probably real and it would be very nice to be able to bring your friend, and anybody would say it would be fair to do it.

But... if it were so easy to do.. can you imagine how many millions of people would make up an excuse like that to bring people into the country? If everybody was honest like you, it would be a different matter.

But having so many dishonest people that would do anything to immigrate to the US, they need to be very careful so the law is very strict.

Good luck, I wish I could help you more.
.

All you can do is find someone that will marry them.

The last advice I would accept is that given to me from the INS. We have found that most of them don't know what's going on half the time. You ask a question to ten people and you'll get ten different answers. Typical government organization.

Why don't you see if there isn't a legal assistance group in you area that you can seek advice from.

One source I've heard used when one is seeking information is the local Salvation Army. They can probably steer you to some one that can get you started on the right path.

instead of bringin someone in who is basically illegal, contact government assistance involving disability and things like that. sometimes its free. AND you will never have to worry about getting in trouble because youre harboring an illegal.

Have you ever looked into hospice in your area? Although he may not be dying, if he is considered 'failure to thrive' there may be a chance you qualify for services with them. They have more than just counseling but nurses and aids that come in and help no matter what the monetary situation is...check it out. That may be cheaper and faster than trying to get someone overseas with him.
