Important question- I had a stent put in my heart in June? |
When I went to a visit to my cardialogist, he checked my heart and told me that I was OK, and said I didn't have to come back for aditional checkups, ( keep in mind I didn't have insurance, and had to apply for aid) later I talked to a nurse who had the same procedure, that told me her cardiologist, said it was important to come back every three mts for check up, did I get blowed off because I didn't have the insurance to pay the cost of the doctor bills, or was the nurse being used for her insurance benifits, You are definitely getting blown off and yes the nurse's insurance is probably getting to pay for some stuff that she might not need. However, in relation to your stent or stents, are you still on plavix, aspirin, lisoprinol, metaprolol or isosorbide? All these medications are common after having a stent placed. Plavix and aspirin are anticoagulants which help keep the platelets in your blood from attaching to area in or around stent and cause heart-attack. Lisoprinol, metaprolol and isosorbide all work toward the smaller vessel of the heart absorb more blood flow and help heart work better. And more than likely they have put you on a medication for hyperlipidema(high cholesterol). All these medications should be followed by MD related to side effects that need blood levels monitored. Do know that although it is a rare condition, scar tissue can develop before or after stent and clog artery again(One of my husbands three stents had to be rota-routed because of this about six months after initial placement) Also you should be on a low salt and low fat diet and exercising regularly(walking is good, start out slowly like 10 minutes daily for 2-3 days then add another 10 minutes until you are walking at least 30 minutes 5 day a week. Good luck with your life change. Anyone who had a stent in June should be followed by a cardiologist. Yes, that doctor gave you bad advice. I think you were "blown off" as you say. It seems those stints should be checked. They have recalled the ones with the medication in them recently. Doctors don't know everything. My moms boyfriend couldn't walk or remember and she took him to his doctor, he said it was high blood pressure and put him on meds. A week later, that didn't work so they did a brain scan and found a huge tumor on his brain next to the stem. STENT??? It is very important to go back for check ups at least every 3 months. I had 2 stents put in February 28, 2006 and I was released from the hospital the following week I had a check up. Then I had a check up once a month, then 2 months and so on, after 5 months I started having chest pain again and was diagnosed with in-stent restenosis. I had to go back and have another angioplasty with 2 stents placement this past September and know I have to go back this coming week for another angiogram. Anyway you should go and get a check up. Good luck. Are you on any medications? Is your cardiologist aware that you don't have a regular doctor? Sometimes the cardiologist will discharge the patient with orders that they need follow-up with their regular family physician. I hope you didn't misunderstand his instructions. You absolutely should be visiting a cardiologist every 6 months at least in addition to taking drugs such a Plavix that helps to prevent further blockages. I had two stents put in over 3 years ago and still see a doctor on a regular basis as well as taking drugs daily to prevent problems. The original doctor you saw should be reported and the nurse gave you the correct advice. |
