For people with family members in a nursing home?

I work in a nursing home as an aid, and I just wanted to remind everyone that, just because your relative is in a facility, all their needs are not automatically met. THe facility I wokr in has something like 45 residents. Many of them have needs such as, clothes that actually fit-old folks gain and loose weight too. Dentures and Eye glasses are another thing that nursing homes cannot provide. Then there are those who have no family who visits. They are stuck with facility blanekts and furnishings. Do you realize how much having a unique blanet or pictures on the walls can help; even those who are lost in a fog os dementia and alzeimers.

Ane especially, old ladies need bras too!!! Most of my residents have a drawer full, and none have clasps that work.

I know what you mean. I work in an Assisted Living Home and we have the same peoblem. Tis sad.

I also work in a nursing home, and agree with you %100. There are alot of needs to be met and a short amount of time to do it in. A picture on the wall of family would help a great deal.

Good for you!!!!! I hope I never have to depend on being in a nursing home, but if more people would speak up maybe it wouldn't be so awful!

Thanks for reminding us of this. I don't have family members in a nursing home but there isn't any reason why we can't donate to people who need help. I'm wondering if that is really a possibility; meaning, can a person just walk into a nursing home and ask if the residents need anything and bring it back to them. By the way, thank you for doing the type of work you do. I have such respect.

I personally think that people should take care of their family at home to keep nursing home employees out of work. My aunt died in a nursing home from an infection from a nasty s***wiper (yeah a CNA). So, your opinion does not matter about what they need. That's why the nursing home has a director to tell the family that. Get a degree if you want to tell people how to handle their family members that are thrown into that $40,000 dollar a year torture chamber

i agree with alyce. i too work in a nursing home. its great to just go visit the relatives and bring a surprise. any thing that you give them that is theirs means everything to them. especially their favorite blanket. so if you want to do something to help, bring a blanket (it dont have to be new) they will loove you for it.

Too many residents in nursing homes are "forgotten" about. It's amazing what having items from their home can do for them, afterall the nursing home is now their home. Residents often refer to the staff as "their family" and it's easy to see why when no one from their own family take the time to visit, call or even send a card. God bless you for doing this type of work, it takes a special person.

Thanks... my folks won't be going to nursing homes. My parents right now are taking care of their parents ( grandma is still alive) and it is way better for her to be part of the family than for the family to move her to a nursing home because "she's a burden"... weren't we all burdens to our parents as kids, but most of them didn't send us to an institution. Yes, there are times when they need special care, but I would venture to say that 80% of old folks would be better off if their kids would allow them to integrate into the family unit the way things were meant to be instead of chasing the almighty dollar and not wanting their parents to be part of the family.
My mother in law lives with us and she is a blessing. I hope that I will be able to care for her as she ages because she deserves a lot better than having strangers around her for her last years.

Thank you for making everyone aware of this. Older people are often forgotten. Out of sight, out of mind. My parents are in a hostel type arrangement. Mum has dementia and dad is caring for her even though he is getting older and sicker because of the stress. Even though we look after our parents and make sure they have all they need, as well as lots of visits and love, some of the people around them totally miss out.
If you have an aged relative you visit, why not visit with one of their nursing home mates that is alone. Offer to bring them anything they need. They may be old, but they still are human and have feelings. Gee, maybe younger people should just visit a nursing home anyway. They will learn so much

I'm a C.N.A. too..I know exactly how you feel..I had and also have family in the one I work in now..I also help my church members families as well as ones I don't either..At my particular nursing home,It's the owner of the building..Also the department heads.. My co-workers and I try our best to make all ends meet..It's hard when you have to pay bills at home and make up what is due at work..Our pay is short,work load is great,but we come back because we love our residence..We find ourselves doing our part ,but lacking in upper department needs..We struggle day to day for soap,pads,diapers,foley's Etc..We make it though..We bring from our own house because their just like family members...You see,It's the bigger people who cut spending or buy cheaper because he thinks it's better,but to make it worse for us/them(residence) when we aren't supplied with the main necessities to take care of them. When you spend 8 or more hours of your life with someone who needs care,you really start to understand...You can learn so much in their..They are our history..When they go,we will never get it back.. They over-look us.. They say we are their eyes and ears,but treat us as though we are nothing..I'm pretty sure you know that? I know where our blessings will come from..Keep doing your part and know somewhere someone else is trying to do theirs..Take care..God Bless..
