How come aids has become a commendable virus deserving of praise when it is no different than any other std?

While there are multiple aids acceptance days there are few which do the same for syphilis or herpes. Should we take to the streets of Toronto in support of gonorrhea. It seems aids has become an honorable virus to recieve when the only people (excluding children born with it and nurse) who get aids are those who have unprotected sex. Is this kindness justified or should we as the general public frown upon these actions? This disscusion should not involve Africa as that is an entirely different matter but in the West, where we have the technology and the information to prevent the spread of this virus. This is also not meant to be an attack on homosexuals or any specific race who has aids but a question on the validity of the consensus we have reached on how to judge those who contract this virus through sexual intercourse.

I missed a few of your points, however, I believe I've got an idea of what you are saying. In my opinion, I believe the HIV/AIDS virus gets the extra attention simply because of all the other diseases you mentioned, it is the only one that can be contracted with or without intercourse and causes serious havoc on the individual's immune system which can lead to death. And to make matters worst there is no known cure. Gonorrhea is curable and so is syphillis among other STD's. Untreated syphillis can also lead to neurological disorders and death, but that is only if untreated, but it is curable. Herpes can be contracted without sexual intercouse, but the infection is somewhat limited to the area of your body exposed to the disease, such as your skin, eye, lips, etc. it is not life threatening and while there is no cure for it, it does not kill you or destroys your immune system. with these facts, I understand the big push to advertise HIV/AIDS.

Despite what I just said, I believe they should make more noise aobut the other STDs as well.

Well, I don't know about praising those who get HIV, but I think the idea is to still support those people--that they are still people deserving of love, encouragement, etc. For so long HIV was so stigmatized, and those who had it died ostracized, with little treatment available. I think some people are trying to stop us from ever going back to that era. While I somewhat agree that there is really no excuse for catching HIV, we are human, and most people have made mistakes somewhere along the way. Think about it...how many married couples have unprotected sex because they trust their partner...only to find out the spouse was cheating? What if they get HIV?

Because a great many of people contract this disease without ever having sex!!!!! It is passed on thru the mother via pregnancy, or someone got it from a dentist, or someone on an HIV infecting mission. It is VERY different from other STD's in that
it is deadly and extremely uncomfortable. Have a heart will ya?

Probably because HIV isn't necessarily an STD. I don't think the idea is to praise or glorify the disease. HIV gets so much attention because it kills legions of people. Herpes and Gonorrhea do not.
