Nursing care of a client with AIDS includes monitoring of T lymphocyte counts. Explain why? The CD-4 T-cell count measures the white cells (T-helper cells) that are infected and destroyed by HIV. Counts indicate the severity of the immune deficiency and are used in conjunction with a baseline count by which they are compared. The CD4 count is a measure of the strength of the immune system. This test also indicates the appropriate time to begin medication. The current guidelines suggest that if your Tcells are around 350 or below HAART(Highly Aggressive Anti-Retroviral Therapy) should begin. HAART is the different pill regimen that people with HIV/AIDS take. There are exceptions to the rule, such as pregnant women (who are obviously positive) begin HAART during pregnancy no matter what their counts look like. This is to prevent the transmission of the virus to the child. |
