Nursing Home & Medicaid? |
My mom (age 62) has no income at all (has been living with her boyfriend for 10 yrs. She had a heart attack and has other medical problems and has to go to a nursing home. Dr. gave her less than 6 months to live. Social worker said she would qualify for Medicaid since she has no income. She is 62 so she can collect a little bit of social security but will the nursing home take all of it? She did work for a few years and can collect a very small pension (reduced benefits since she will be collecting early). Will they take that too? She has no insurance (health nor life insurance). She would like to start collecting the SSI & pension so us kids won't get stuck paying funeral costs out of pocket. Not sure if assisted living is what she needs - she cannot even get out of the chair and into bed on her own : ( The Nursing Home will take what Medicaid will pay. You should check with the state that you live in. In NY where I am, my grandparents both went into a nursing home and we dealt with the same issue. There was a big-to-do in regards to their estate (house/bank accounts/stocks) and my grandfather had to sign over everything to my uncle so the State wouldn't claim it. They had to be admitted to the home under the premise that they were "poor." Like I said, please consult the Bureau For The Aged (I believe thats what its called?) in your state to find out if your mom can do the same as my grandparents. Best of luck to you! Does your area have an agency that deals with issues related to senior citizens? It may be called an "agency on aging" or something similar. If there is such an agency, they can help you with all of your questions. The social worker also should be able to either answer your questions or refer you to someone who can. |
