Nursing home pharmacy?

Hi I have an interview in a few days at CVS for a Pharmacy Tech position (I live in Oklahoma). I was reading online that pharmacy techs that work in drug stores pay the least compared to hospitals and such. Well I was wondering if nursing homes have pharmacy techs? My dad is in a nursing home and I know there is always someone pushing around the medicine cart distributing meds to residents... but are they pharmacy techs or actual pharmacists? I think after a year or so experience I would like to work in a nursing home as a pharmacy tech because I love to visit with the elderly people and see how happy it makes them to talk to somebody. So do the nursing homes have the TECH position or is it only an actual PHARMACIST? Thanks!!!

The person distributing meds to residents is a nurse, not a pharmacy tech. Pharmacy techs do not work in nursing homes, nor do pharmacists in most facilities. They do have med techs, which are CNA's with advanced training that qualified them to pass meds. Pharmacy techs work for outside pharmacies, and are only in the nursing home long enough to deliver all the meds in a brown paper bag to each of the units in the building. The nurses then count everything and stock thier cart with supplies and meds.

In hospitals and nursing facilities, the pharmacy technician becomes more involved in patient care. Pharmacy technicians in health care facilities, such as hospitals and nursing homes, often fill prescriptions for patients and deliver them on a daily basis. They also record their dosages on the patient鈥檚 chart.

I know that the pharmacy techs that work in nursing homes in my area do get paid much more than retail pharmacy techs because these nursing homes are affiliated with the regional hospitals.

Unless it is a very large skilled nursing facility, it is doubtful that many have a pharmacy, much less an Pharm Techs.

There are numerous Pharm Techs in hospitals, who given a copy of the patients orders from the nursing unit, will often transcribe these pharmacy orders inot a computer or onto a patient card, from which the patient's medications are sent to the nursing unit from the hospital pharmacy. Again in large SNFs or SNFs associated with a hospital a PhT might perform similar functions (always checked by a pharmacist)

I know of no state where a Pharmacy tech can document dosages medications or any other information into a patient's chart.

In my experience, the people pushing the medications around nursing homes on carts and passing the medications to patients are part of the nursing staff. Nurses are educated and licensed to provide medications to patients on the prescription of a physician or nurse practitioner.
