Why does hospice put onions in the rooms of dying patients?

i've looked all over the internet and talked to a few nurses but no one seems to know the answer. i would just ask the hospice workers but the time never seems right, if you know what i mean.

it seems odd to me, too! i'm sure sure if hospice would do this in the home but i've seen it several times in hospital rooms. the onions are always in a small dish and look as though they've been sauteed (although they may just have been sitting there a few days).

I volunteer for hospice in home settings, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospital, and hospice house and have never heard of, nor have ever seen what you describe.

I have never heard anything like this before , I'm very curious myself now, I hope someone can answer you.

probably because of the odor dying and dead people leave

EDIT: What is hospice??

I've dealt with Hospice in the home twice since May of 07 two different nurses and neither of them put onions in the room.... That sounds odd to me?

in some ancient cultures, onions symbolize eternity. Apparantly, in Egypt, some of the dead were mummified with onions over their eyes, against the ears, and sometimes in **other** places. It may have something to do with that?

Maybe its for evil spirits - who knows!
