Should I help my sister while she is off work for injury? |
She broke her leg in a diving incident. She is an LPN that does home health care with per diem nursing home hours on the side, but no sick leave, vacation or health insurance. She had been working extra hours to make ends meet the last few months. Her husband works, but only in the last 2 yrs of the 10yrs they've been married, and its unskilled labor. She has one 9 yr old son. She will be of work at least a month. She has old debts, an old house, and just bought a new car b/c hers was totalled, accident technically her fault. I live four states away. I'm wondering if I should give her some money to help with her bills while she is recovering. No one else in my family has money to spare to help. Her in-laws get by, but these people also foisted their chronically unemployed son on her to marry and thought it was fine for her to support him instead getting a job to pay for his hobbies and other wants. I would wait alittle while and see if her husband takes up the slack, this may be just what it will take.He needs to learn responsibility,on the other hand don't let your sister go hungry because she is unable to work. She will be back ON her feet in 6 weeks or so. What is your question? This is family you are obligated. I see where this can be a difficult decision. If you and your sister are close...I would help in a minimal way. I say minimal because your sister might feel really bad for having to have help to stay afloat. Plus it may be very stressful to know now she owe you money too. Though these choices were hers to make, she might have never realized how bad things might end up. It is always good to be able to rely on family despite choices made and know that they are there. Unfortunately your sister is probably feeling the same pain about her spouse as you verbalized (get a job, and support your family), so your support both emotionally and finanically may be the greatest thing you can do for her. You must want to do something or else you would not ask this question. If she lives near by, and you have the time ask her if you can help around the house and/or run errands. That is always a good thing. This always works; before you leave then offer her a little bit of money and tell her that she will insult you if she offers it back. Tell her it is a gift and that you love her etc... It can help some. If you want you can ask her if she needs to borrow some money that she can pay later. Keep in mind that because of her husband that she might not be able to pay it back. Good luck. Anyway, it is good Karma if you go for that sort of thing. |
