Can anyone tell me if an uncertified phlebotomist can hook up I.V's in a private clinic?

I was thinking that the only person who can hook up I'V's is an LPN or nurse or can they be on the premise when the I.V.'s are being hooked up. I myself am a certified phlebotomist and was wondering if I could get a job in the medical field in a small clinic hooking up I.V.'s. Can anyone in the field answer my questions?Thank you in advance.

this is for a private small clinic that I am thinking about applying for a job for. It is all natural stuff in the I.V."s so it is not medications just glutithione, vitamin C, and sometimes ozone or they call it chelation..I just don't want to make a fool out of myself for applying.I have a friend that is uncertified in phlebotomy but has been taught in phlebotomy, so she also wants to apply. This place is for lyme disease and strictly works with the amish and mennonite.

Generally, a phlebotomist is certified for venipuncture to draw blood for testing samples or another procedure such as blood or plasma donation. To hang an IV means you would be administering medications (natural or manufactured) and you would need to be licensed to do this. The most you would be able to do is obtain IV access and then only with the proper certification. You can check one of two places to see if you qualify:1) The prospective employer should be able to tell you what the requirements are for the position (if they can't tell you this, you REALLY don't want to work there) and 2) Contact the state board that certified you. These two should give you the same information and if they differ you should follow what the board tells you.

You have to be a certified LPN or LVN

I have a friend on dialysis and they have a phlebotomist that comes in sometimes and she hooks people up to the machines, etc.....

so I don't see why not....

It depends on what you are running through the IV. Accredited facilities will require you to be IV certified to work with IV's. If there is any medication running in the IV, you must be an RN. It does vary from state to state, so check with the local board of registered nurses.

You need to check with your State licensing board. Different States will have different regulations about who can hook up what with which medication and you may have to take a test to get a separate certification or stamp for IVs.
