What kind of salary should a CNA and a LPN make, and is it better to work at a hospital or nursing home?

I am a CNA right now and I will be going on to LPN this spring. I have not worked anywhere yet so I have only clinical experience and I was woundering what kind of salary I should expect to recieve as a CNA and what I should expect as a LPN. I was also wandering if it is better to work at a hospital or a nursing home. I was really wanting to work at a hospital but I have been told it's better to work at a nursing home at least for LPN's. I really liked caring for the residents at the nursing home I did my clinicals, but I have always been told that ppl are under paid at nursing homes, and I want to make the most salary available for my profession.

It truly depends on your area. When I began working as an LPN over 7 years ago, I made only $9/hour. Which is what I was making a year prior to that as a phlebotomist, and a bit discerning. In the 4 years I worked at the NH, may hourly rate grew to $15/hour, almost 4 years ago. I am now working in a psych facility making just under $16/hour. And have heard they are making killer $$$ at the NH's now. Who knows, depends on the area, who you know, if you can get into a hospital (Do you know anyone who can help you get on at hospital?), LPNs are mainly glorified CNA's in hospitals, and there is nothing wrong with that, just don't expect a lot of clinical experience there.

My best friend went from a CNA to an LPN and she hated it, she is finally switching back to being a CNA, because she said that she didn't like the job, and the pay was almost the same as CNA.

CNAs should not make more than 14.00 an hour. LPNs should make around 20

hospitals are better paying...

i have worked in both and nursing home and a hospital and i am close friends with nurses and cnas

Try to get a job at a hospital so you can master a lot of skills. Nursing homes do not pay well and the work is hard unless you really love the elderly. the pay depends on where you live.

A CNA here makes anywhere from $6.50 to $8.50 and hour. The LPN makes anywhere from $15 to $20 an hour depending on where your work. A hospital usually pays more with longer hours. A Nursing home has a more relaxed environment. It would also depend on your own personal preference. Hope this helps somewhat.

According to PayScale.com, the median salary for an LPN working in a nursing home is $17.67/hour. And the median salary for an LPN working in a hospital is $15.69/hour. However, these are median figures and many Nurses will earn more or less than these amounts depending on location, experience, and other factors. Hope that helps,
