Got a few questions about my cats...?

When our female cat was about 7 mo old, we brought home a male kitten. She didn't like him at first, but then she began mothering him (i.e. cleaning him and having him nurse on her). At first we thought it was really cute, but now the male is about 6 months old and she still bathes him and allows him to try and nurse off of her. The female has become quite mature now and he is coming into his maturity. We are going to have them fixed very soon here so we don't end up with kittens. What I want to know is when we get them fixed, will it curve this behavior?
Also, will getting them fixed drastically change their personalities?
Also, since our male has slowly started to become more mature, he is more distant with us, as just a couple weeks ago, he was a total sweetie, always wanting attention. Our female is still sweet as can be, so what's with the attitude change in him? Any advice will be helpful. I've never had more than one cat at a time before.

If your female cat is coming into heat, then you might be seeing a temperament change in your male cat. You definitely should have them both altered (neutered/spayed). What your calling "sweet" in your female cat could actually be her trying to "seduce" him (for a lack of a better way of saying). This will make a big difference...for the better. Plus, cats can have an unbelievable amount of kittens. (In a cats lifetime, they can have more than 400,000 kittens...this is not an exaggeration). Plus having your cats altered means: less likely to run away, will be less likely to be temperamental, and less likely to develop cancer (such as testicular cancer).

fixing the female shouldn't change anything. Get the male fixed soon or he will turn into a monstor! Male cats are so much sweeter after being fixed. Since the male grew up knowing the female, they should continue to be friends. They may outgrow the licking part, but my cats do it periodically still. The funny thing is, it's my male 7 yr old cat that licks my 2yr old female cat (both fixed). cats have their own personalities that develop, whether they are female or male. It doesn't make much difference and fixing them will only improve any behaviour problems.

When my male was fixed, he didn't change too much, only his need for attention. He also sleeps a lot more. He doesn't spray outside anymore (My neighbors were happy) and he stays inside a lot more. I don't know what it will affect with another cat. Your female should be about the same, excluding the spraying because females don't spray in the first place.

nueturing some cats does change them alittle. Usually make them abit lazier and during mateing season they wont want to go outside as much to look for a mate. They also wont spray. The personality doesnt change though. They just get alittle lazy. But different cats react different. The one we have now is still territorial and is active alot. His personality hasnt changed a bit.

Males tend to draw back when they start becoming mature once you have him fixed it should curb his want for independance. As for the nursing issue I'm not sure was he weened too early? Cuz that's the only reason I can think of of it. Your female shouldn't change behavioral patterens once fixed.

i have had a few cats at a time and generally as the kittens get older the older cats will start to ignore them or not allow them to nurse. this can take a while for the kitten to figure out and some times the older cat will put up with it for a while. also, when female cats are fixed they usually gain more weight and lose some of their motherly instinct. male cats as they become older do become more independent. however after any of my male cats were fixed i never noticed any major changes. so, the nursing should stop in a matter of a few weeks. good luck with them!

I've had cats for twenty some years. I find they are happier after they are fixed. More playful and male and females get along well with each other after having been fixed.
I had a 5 year old female that was lonely w/o another cat. So I got a male of 8 years old for her. Both fixed. They became best buddies after a couple weeks.
Not being fixed the cats are preoccupied. Its not true that they get fat a lazy from neutering or spaying.

I have had the same exp w/ my two cats. She came from a feral cat that had a litter behind our house. He just appeared a few weeks later and the mother cat took him in. Anyway, the female kitten "nursed" him and cleaned him all the time.
She continued to allow this until she went into "heat". Then their behavior changed. He no longer does this, but they both still clean each other and hold onto each other when they sleep. My male changed his behavior also. After you have him fixed- he will really MELLOW out. All my previous male cats changed their behavior once they were neutered. His attitude change has to do with his male instincts and his readiness to breed. Be careful, we had to lock our cats in the house for an ice storm & she ended up going into heat b4 we noticed.- We now have kittens on the way and due in about the next 10 days. Yikes. I have also been told that when a kitten is removed from its mother too soon- they will have the constant urge to "nurse" on something. It's comforting to them. I had a cat several years ago that had this problem when I brought him home. He wouldn't let me sleep because he wanted to "nurse" on my earlobes all night.
Anyway, he will eventually stop- sooner than you might think.

Cats weaned too early often do this, they call it 'wool sucking', and he may or may not grow out of it. The behavior change is likey due to him growing up and her smelling interesting in a sexual way, the cats and dogs are coming into heat this time of year. He will know that she is coming into heat long before you do. Getting them fixed does not alter their basic personalities, it just prevents the specific sexual behaviors: breeding, marking, going into heat and the yowling that goes with it. Cats do indeed breed faster than rabbits, it's not unusual for a cat to have 2 or even 3 litters per year. It takes a month or two for the hormones to run dry after they're fixed, so it's not an overnight change either.

Actually, both will become very very nice pets - calm and sweet - as long as you provide them with good quality food; an interesting environment to live in (plenty of toys, cat perches by the window; cat condo, cat trees, etc.); loads of loving affection; and two clean litter boxes!
