3 Month old kitten 'nursing' on dog?

My 3 month old (YES, I'm sure she's 3months) kitten was weaned several weeks ago (NOT too early - her mother and 2 brothers were still living with her at the rescue agency), and eats solid food with no problem, but has recently started trying to nurse on my neutered male dog at night. He does not like it and will run away from her; she follows him and trys again. It is keeping us all up at night. I HAVE tried bitter apple.
Does anyone have any *constructive* advice (not 'give her a bottle,' not 'she was weaned too early,' not ' try bitter apple.')?
Thanks.

My female kitten suckled on her brother (from an earlier litter) for a year. It is a comfort thing. However he allowed it.

Maybe she needs a kitten friend?

I simply keep them seperated for a couple of days if that is possible. The kitten will hopefully forget about trying to nurse on your dog by that point.

You could try putting a little Vick's vapor rub on the under belly of your dog. Not to much or your dog will be unhappy with you. After a few nights it should deter the kitten. I have a male cat who will suck on yarn ties on a blanket and act like he is nursing and he is six years old...you could try that in substitute while you are treating your dog.

Well I have heard of Kittens and Puppies trying to nurse on other animals before, like 1st Cocker Spaniel we had she was so use to nursing on her Mom that she tried to do that on her Dad, then after we got her, the Dog tried to drink from our part German Shepard Dog.

OK weird answer here. Get a small blanket that is nubby (one that is made that way) not the kind that develops like that over time, 'cause the nubs will come off and choke the little baby. Once you have the blanket have the dog lay on it during the day. If he won't then rub it all over him, and I really do mean all over him. Different parts of his body smells different. Then when it is bed time, lay the kitten on it and pet her for a little while. She should start suckling around on it. Keep petting her for a little while longer, you should be able to tell when she is relaxed. then off you go to bed. It is just like when a small human child has a binky. Good luck:)
