Why is my mother cat hissing at her own male kitten?

the kitten is 6 months old so it's no longer nursing, the mother is not pregnant cuz she's an indoor cat so what is going on they are like best buds and the only animals in the house?

It means she wants the kitten to go on its own. once they've reached a certain age the mother no longer treats them like kittens. They become just another cat. Some mother cats after a while can't even tell it was her kitten. That's why cats are incest

maybe she does not feel well or he pissed her off

ok the mother cat is trying to show the kitten how to live without her. so she is hissing and pushing it away.

Was he bothering her? My older males used to try to nurse still sometimes (weird, i know!) and she'd get pissed off at them. Even now (they're like 9 months) they have their fights now and then when they get cranky. They still cuddle and clean each other and are great friends, though.

My mom cat never pushed her babies away. Even at 9 months old she still babies them sometimes.

Also, make sure the male is fixed... you don't want any inbred babies. If she's in heat and doesn't want males to bother her, that may part of it.

maybe she is trying to tell him what is her territory, and to stay out of it.

Your little boy kitty has reached sexual maturity. It's just possible he has been showing some interest in her gender. Why don't you get both of them fixed?
