Should you have the right to refuse medication?

I have been admitted to a hospital twice. Both times I was yelling at my parents because they have interefered in my life WAY TOO MUCH. -They called the police and had me admitted to a mental hospital. My parents would tell the doctors that I was "Out of control".
-I refused to take the medication that they wanted to give me. So they had five male nurses tackle me and tie me up in restraints and inject me with haldol and rispiridone.

This is the law. The law gives them the power to do this and to get away with it.

Should the laws be changed. Shouldn't I have the right to refuse medication ?

The first two responses....
are you guys COMPLETELY RETARDED??

Do you have any idea of the abuse that goes on in these places???

I was just STANDING THERE! I was quiet. I politely told the doctor that I would not take his pills. So he said... "We have ways of forcing you".

These people completely raped my mind. And you tards tell me I NEEDED to be there?

I hope it happens to you.

No, the laws should not be changed. If someone is so combative with staff in their second involuntary hospitalization that they need 5 male staff to hold them down, then they obviously need to be given medication to calm them down for their own safety and the safety of their staff members. Mental health professionals are very sensitive - and the laws are very sensitive - to the rights of patients, and they attempt to provide treatment in the least restrictive setting possible. If someone is involuntarily committed to a mental hospital in this day and age, then they need to be there.

Regardless all those laws, I would say that your parents are not your enemy. There are forcing you to take the medicines for your own good health. If it wasn't good for you then they wouldn't force you to take it.

If you had a heart condition and had to take medication for your life-health, it is not different from if you need medication for mental-well being. Whether you should have a right to refuse to take medication or not, I think it depends on you personally, and those who care about you. Try asking for counseling and tell them to give you time to talk through things with someone and then you and your counselor can decide, you need to be open to bettering yourself, even if you have to take medication to help you to better yourself. It is your life, you should take every opportunity to be your best.

It's too much of a coincidence that your parents, law enforcement, AND the doctors at the hospital are all in agreeance with what is going on with you. You apparently are not in a stable mental state and therefore not capable to make rational decisions for yourself. That is why the law was created. Even if you were an adult and not a minor, if you exhibit behavior that shows you are mentally unstable, there are laws for that too. These people care (whether you believe that at the present time is of no consequence) and are only after your well-being. One day you will look back and be thankful that someone cared enough to intervene and get you help. Just accept the help...it will make things easier for you in the long run. Good luck and God Bless.

Your answer showed unwarranted anger toward strangers just for answering a question that YOU asked, just because they didn't give you the answer that you wanted to hear. I also read your other questions.Sounds like to me your parents are right. GET HELP!!!

If you are committed to a psychiatric hospital and do not take medication to calm you down, you would NEVER get out.
Take the medicine. It will probably do you good.

(I noticed that you are a scientologist. Nothing said here will help a brainwashed person. Sorry that happened to you.)
