Childbirth & the Muslim religion.?

Muslim women are not allowed to show any of their body to another male. How do they go about childbirth in North American hospitals?
Must they seek out only female OB/GYN's? There are also male nurses in hospitals. Or do they always give birth at home in the traditional manner?

I mean no disrespect by this question. Thanks in advance for your information respecting this topic.

I understand your confusion, and hope to be able to help you.

You are right, in Islam, a woman cannot show her awrah to men other than her husband, and certain parts of her awrah to her father and brothers and such. The public awrah consists of everything but the face and hands (and of course feet), and for her family and female friends is from her chest to her knees. For the male, his awrah is from the bellybutton to the knees. There are exceptions, and this is one of them. While Muslim women will request a female doctor, they aren't always readily available. God does not want us to suffer, so it is accepted if a male doctor assists with childbirth, surgery, or any immediate medical condition. Some Muslim women even have male gynocologists, but the majority prefer female.
So it is not forbidden to be seen by a physician or assistant in a time of need, though females are preferrable. It is similar to pork. It is forbidden and considered unclean as food, however if one is in a life or death situation or it is the only means of food, then it is okay to be eaten.

I myself prefer a homebirth or something close to it because I don't like the idea of doing something so completely natural to the convenience of the doctor (lying on back, breaking water with a hook, inducing, unnecessary c-section, drugs drugs drugs). I know many prefer this way (including Muslims) but I do not. I'm a homeopath you could say.

Anyways, hope that helped!

I am sure they must be using male nurses. The nurse is a nurse, not male or female.

"Any of their body"? Where did you get this idea?

There are clinics for birthing too. You don't have to give birth at a hospital. Midwives are generally female.

Good question. Matters that are forbidden become permissible when it is due to life and death situations or similarly a medical necessity.

So, the muslim woman tries to get all women as much as she can and deals with the men out of such important necessity as her health.

I also want to be clear that the only type of necessity that makes things permissible is the type of necessity that is life and death or medical. Because you feel peer pressure or someone stares or says something negative to you, doesn't then make an act permissible.

There are verses in the quran where it explains that you can even eat pork if it is to save your life, but only take what little you need to live.
