My understanding is that repentance is indicated by turning away from the sin. Since God judges the heart of man, He would know whether a person was sincere in his or her repentance.

Yeah, it will still count. In all honesty, it ALL still counts. You can repent from now until the day you die, and you will still have to answer for all of the wrongs you've committed in your life. If you are a Christian, you will be forgiven for all of them, but you still have to answer for them.
