Need advice for non writing non-fiction synopsis?

Memoirs of a male nurse, ready to go to the agent/publisher. Have had the work assessed by a credible literary assessment agency ie Driftwood Manuscripts, great help, worth the money. Now ready to send it to first agent or publisher. There's a lot of advice floating around the net, but need something concrete. Thought I'd seek your advice before taking any further steps.

The most important thing you need to do is create your list of agents and see what their submission requirements are for a non-fiction proposal. Some will want a longer synopsis than others, so you might need to write a couple different versions.

Start out by writing about who you are and the thesis of the memoir. What compelled you to write the book and will similarly interest readers in your story? For example: overcoming prejudice to achieve success and fulfillment in a female-dominated career; or coming out of a poor background to work your way through nursing school and become head nurse at a prestigious private hospital. An encapsulating statement.

Then you can write about the story you tell.

Don't let your synopsis get too bogged down in details. Stick with the main thread of the memoir, whether that's something like a plot or a theme, or whatever holds the book together. How much detail you have room for will depend on how long a synopsis the agent wants.

Without more specifics, it's hard to offer more concrete advice. There have been, very recently, a couple memoirs that have been exposed as fabrications (not just Frey), so you might want to include some references so the agency or publisher can do some quick fact-checking. Even if they don't fact check right off, it's a sign of good faith on your part.

Good luck!
