Is it fair to wake up patients @ 6 am just to give them a wash?? |
I've been having this argument with this slow Indian male nurse who is so adamant that we should wake up patient and wash them in the morning just so they can get numbers to show the mornign staff .I told him his out of order for doing that and that washes should only be done to patients who are incontinent.I told him a ten year old would have understand but he cant seem to find the logic thats why i questioned him how did he ever become a nurse without sound judgement. NO, I do not think so, I have spent a lot of time in hospitals as a patient, patients are woken up too often, sometimes in the evening woken from a good sleep to be given a sleeping tablet, but as for a wash, no, there is all day to do that, the patient is not going anywhere, nurse's whether qualified or nurses aides are not thanked enough for the work they do, but in most hospitals there would be enough staff to wash those who cannot do it themselves sometime during the day when they are awake, my suggestion would be for you to pack this indians bags and send him back where he came from, If it were unnecessary and NOT a requirement of the job, then it is a little RUDE to do that to a patient. Agreed. they should if they stink... I've experienced the same but at 3pm and luckily it was a female nurse... no, i would wait!! Your facility should have a policy as to who gets any washing and when. Any supervisor should have already covered with all that work there, or would have anything to do with that area. why not they woke me at 2 am to give me sleeping pills ???? If thats a slow time then I would do it! If I were the patient I would rather get woke up at 6 am to be washed than not washedat all...If you guys stay busy(I'm sure you do)It may be the best time! They can then have breakfast and sleep like babies clean and fed! Sounds Great to me..As long as they can go BACK to sleep!!!! i think you are right but unfortunately it does happen i use to work in a care home for disable children and we the night staff had to wash and bed shower three children before the day staff came on duty so we would be waking them up 6 o'clock to, it was not a nice thing to to do as all of them would be asleep and would then be woken up quickly then placed in there wheelchair, only then to be placed on a cold shower table to have a very quick spray with most of the time cool or luck warm water. although it most hospitals nurses are trying to keep up with the clock through being shortstaffed. its abusive to wake patients up to wash them at 6 in the morning plus if a patient is capable of washing them selves no one should interfere with their dignity. if a patient is soiled or wet then they should be woken up for their own benefit and also infection control should be maintained. Your very right in your opinion that this type of care is wrong. Any actions like this constitute institutional abuse; is it written in these patients care plans that they should be woken at 6am, the answer to that, I would hazard a guess, is probably no. 'To keep the day staff happy' does not justify a sound rationale for this to happen. Oh I know this argument well and YES, I couldn't agree with you MORE. Unfortunately it comes down to economics and the budget of the care facility concerning the number of staff per patient ratio. The same augment is true in reverse; would you want to be put back to bed at 4pm or earlier just because there is not enough staff to put you to bed at a more reasonable time? Is this what 'waiting for God' is all about? I only ever got patients/clients washed who requested it or were not in the position to decide for themselves - such as those who were incontinent. This also applies to those we dressed before breakfast. This made me very unpopular with the management and day staff but not with the patients - who were my only concern. if you think thats stupid.how bout the nurse who woke me up to give me my sleepping pill. Hate to tell you but that is what it is like in any care home or hospital. It , unfortuantely, legal to start washing them after 6am. Why not suggest you start with the incontinent ones and , if time allows , move on to the continent ones? That way you both get what you wnat. In some cases, yes this needs to be done , but i have always felt 7am is early enough, and that night staff, should do half the ward and morning shift do the other half, more n/a are requied,to help in the mornings ,so the trained staff can get on with more important things, as for your pal the indian nurse ,,he is living proof, evolution is going backwards, if he looks likes hes about to nod off anytime, give him a startled nudge and say in a loud voice , WAKEY WAKEY ,,,,LOL No it is not. I have worked in Social Care for more than 10 years, and I have refused to get someone up at 6 am to wash them. All it is for, is to relieve the day staff of some work. Tell your nurse that he must understand what 'Dignity in Care' is! If he did that with me - he would get more than my poo in his face - this kind of thing INFURIATES me! Tell the nurse to understand the word 'Dignity'. |
