NICU nurse pros & cons?

Whats the pros & cons of being a neonatal intensice care unit/NICU nurse? I want to be on because I was 3 months premature and I feel like I have a connection....lol....I dont know why though

Nursing careers are always going to be in demand, so don't worry about the 'why do I feel this way' thing! If you go to nursing school, you might end up feeling a pull to another department, too, which is just as good.

Now, one of the cons to neonatal is that sometimes things go bad - sometimes they go bad fast, and sometimes it's a long, bad process. You don't just get the good miracles, and people forget that when they go into healthcare. It's definitely a speciality of extremes. You're not just dealing with the patient, but also the family of the patient.

My Mom was a NICU nurse for many years, and found it very rewarding, but be prepared for difficult hours, and the very difficult task of helping babies and children pass on in the most comfortable way, not many nurses stay in NICU their whole careers, because it is very difficult emotionally and physically, good luck :)

As a registered nurse myself, I would encourage you to seriously considering nursing as a career. For one thing, nurses are in demand!!! For many of us, nursing is a "calling". Sounds corny, but kinda like the connection you describe. As far as choosing NICU, only you will be able to find your niche in nursing. For me, working with little babies and children was a little too emotional. I believe it takes special people to care for these little patients and this may be your "calling". If you do choose to pursue nursing, remember that in your training, you will be exposed to all different types of nursing care in a hospital setting and in the community. Best of luck to you.
