Does being a mom and being in the nursing field affect your family life?

I am really considering nursing and want a Nurse to answer this question. I want to be a neonatal nurse.

Every job you take will effect your family life. It is a part of who you are. What is largely up to you is how much you let it encroach on your personal life...I involve my family in my business because it helps me cross over and bleed the lines of my world. I think it makes me more at peace, and them at peace, because they are such a part of me. I also share my family with my professional world.

I think being a nurse keeps you especially connected with your family, and vice versa.

Good luck!

I work as a labor and delivery nurse. We work 12 hour shifts that often stretch longer because babies don't always come when you want them to. In order to minimize the disruption to my family life I work the night shift and try to work my three or four nights in a row. The only thing I've really had to sacrifice is sleep but it has gotten easier now that my children are in school. I just sleep until they get home.

Being a nurse can positively affect your family in a several ways. Many nursing jobs are in high demand, therefore employers offer fairly flexible hours and options such as job sharing and many offer good benefits even for part time employees. Another benefit is the education you receive helps you to become a resource to your family (and your friends, and neighbors, and everyone else!). I spend a lot more time with my family now then when I was working as a medic on an ambulance. There are also many shift options from as short as filling in on a four hour shift up to 12 hour shifts. I want to mention one last thing. Many nursing programs now are catering to the person changing careers, offering classes at night and on weekends, as well as part time studies and, don't forget, you can knock out some of your classes online. I wish you the best in making your decision.

How about a nurses child? When you come home you will be very tired and it may affect your children. My Mother would often come home and tell us about patients who had died and she would cry.Sometimes we cryed too.She took care of alot of cancer patients but of all ages. I think it actually teachs your child to be a kinder better person if you are a kind person. My Mom has a heart of gold. You will be working with Babies so in some ways you will be happy but Im sure you will have times where one passes away and it doesnt hurt to share your sadness with your children in a controlled way because it teachs them compassion.
