Would you suggest going into neonatal nursing? |
I am doing a research report and need to know a couple things about neonatal nusring!---------THX i would like to know if you like or think it is interesting to go to school for that....and what you learn Yes, I do think it is very interesting. Yes, it can be sad at times, but these days rarely does a premature baby die, unless it's under 23 weeks gestation. I love everything about it. You learn what organ develops when during pregnancy, You learn all the possible condtions, a baby can like birth defects, intestinal problems, heart problems, and how to care for a premature or very sick baby. It would be a very rewarding job, and parents would look up to you as a hero figure. Of, course some babies will die, and it will be sad, but that happens. Good luck! it is a very sad field and you should see what you are getting yourself into before hand. if you are in a nursing program you will do a clinical rotation there and you will see the whole package. if you're working in the intensive care unit it will be even more intense. i would recommend also taking some classes as a lactation consultant so that you can help women with breastfeeding. good luck and nursing is the best thing you can do. While I never worked w/ newborns (I've only worked w/ adults), I had several friends that worked in the NICU for several years. They were responsible for 1 to 2 babies at a time. These newborns were extremely small and required tons of care. They have tubes....here, there, and everywhere. Most have an IV in their forehead (put in by the RN), they have a feeding tube (inserted by the doctor), and they are often on oxygen. The nurse is responsible for vital signs, tube feedings, checking the oxygen rate, monitoring the IV, and all other "nursing orders" such as intake (charting what they eat) and output (charting their diapers) and more. While this can be a very frustrating job (drug babies, shaken babies), this job can also be very satisfying. Some of the babies actually do get better and go home healthy. Most of my girlfriends stayed in this field for about 7years and then "burn out" set in. They're still in nursing but most have moved into some type of management. Good luck. |
