Neonatal nursing career?

I was thinking about becoming a neonatal nurse. I would really like to be one of the nurses that takes care of the newborn babies and gives the mother in labor the IVs and helps her breathe. Any job suggestions?

Well, you're describing two different jobs.

The nurse who works with women in labor is a Labor & Delivery nurse. And you do much more than start an IV and help her breathe. It is a job with a lot of legal responsibility and you work very independently, because the doctors basically just show up to catch the baby when it is born. You manage the entire labor and are responsible for knowing how to interpret fetal monitoring and know when a baby is in distress.

A nurse who works with healthy newborns in a regular nursery is usually referred to as a Newborn Nursery Nurse. Many hospitals do not have a formal nursery nurse since most babies spend the hospitalization in the room with the mother, so it is postpartum nurses who care for both mothers and the babies.

A neonatal nurse is more often used to describe a nurse who works in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with sick or premature infants.

To do any of these jobs, you need to be a Registered Nurse, which is a minimum of a 2 year associates degree.
