Do you consider the Philippines as your retirement destination?

Philippines offers reasonable labor cost. We supply the best domestic helpers and caregivers in the world. Our nurses and other medical practitioners are all over Asia, Middle East, U.S. and European hospitals.

A US$1.00 is about Php50.00 so a few dollars of retirement money will go a long way.

What would be your concerns?

For 'shoe s' - we just had a typhoon and people cut down too many trees, so what!
One week after the storm which almost destroyed the yachts of seven of my friends in Puerto Galera, killed a pile of people and put thousands on the ground, this country has forgotten about the problems, and the people involved are probably smiling again already. We have 20 typhoons a year at least.
Fate is what happens here and forgiveness and forgetting disasters is part of the psyche-life goes on....

After that, I conider this country to be the following:-

The safest country I've EVER lived in.
The friendliest country I've EVER lived in
The cheapest country I've EVER lived in
The most beautiful country I've EVER lived in
The most beautiful ladies I've EVER seen (bar Siberia)

How about that!!

This is the perfect retirement country and they need our money, so quit your jobs and come here for some fantastic lifestyle changes.

i love the philippines other than the car exaust yes i plan to retire there Report It

Whenever you hear the news of disasters it seems like it happen all over the Philippines. All those typhoon disasters happen in those provinces lying under the typhoon path, they include leyte and Samar,Mindoro,Albay-Bicol region and up Luzon island. The rest are rarely hit by typhoon. Report It

NO WAY.

Actually, I briefly thought about it when I retired. The problem was no american (tricare) approved medical facilities that I could find, and the guerillas.

A corrupt Government
A plethora of natural disasters
Third world conditions
Crime
JI training camps on the Southern islands

The Philippines is beautiful though, as are the people (my brother is married to a Filipino lady and spent several years there)

concerns you just lost 1000 people, dead from a disaster and this isnt the 1st time, nope I dont think I want to live there

I will certainly retire in the Philippines.

First of all $US = PHP 50 means absolutely nothing. These are just accounting units.

What you can buy for PHP 50 in the Philippines vs. what you can buy for $US 1 in the US is the key.

I've been living in the Philippines for two years and don't want to leave! Unfortunately I'm too young to retire, and will need to relocate back to my company's headquarters. I could definitely picture me staying here long-term!

You kidding me. I can get two (nice) maids on that retirement pay. No pun intended. Yep, definitely and I will live somewhere in the east coast of Mindanao, province of Surigao maybe.
Sell me house in Washington, and live like a Filipino.

Nothing compares to the Filipino spirit. Ive been to many problems and trias when I was in that country. I can say that it's really hard to live there when you have nothing. But still a lot of lessons I've learned in life because of things happened to me in that country. I will absolutely put it on my no.1 list as my retirement destination. Its not just because of money or benefits when you live there. Its the Filipino spirit.

I just love the Christmas there. And I really miss it.

yes, definitely! i've lived here since birth and will retire here (but not too soon yet). a friend of mine, he's a pinoy is more interested in exploring the many islands than going abroad.. there's a lot to see in the different islands, different activities, diff. interests so it's not that boring..

there will always be typhoons here.. but look at the spirit of pinoys, even after a few days of sorrow, you will see them smile and forget what happened, coz it's a natural disaster, nobody can be blamed for what happened.

right now, my truthful answer is "no." because i'm frustrated about the goings-on in this country and leaving it all behind will definitely be a welcome option. and i will definitely fight with someone who thinks that by saying this, i'm being "unpatriotic."

ask me this question again in a few months, a few years--i might just give you a different answer.

Already here in Iloilo for the past 5 years. Retired US Navy and we have good Tricare facilities here. Moving here for retirement was one of the best decisions I ever made.
